National Minority and Public Health  Observances

April 2, 2015

Greetings!

April is National Minority Health month, and April 6 - 12 is National Public Health week.  Both seek to improve health inequities.  I recently completed the Stanford University Chronic Disease Self-Management, Lay Leader program. It has prepared me to help people improve their healthful behaviors.  Additionally, I will complete the Emory University Health Coach program next week, and scheduled to take the Stanford University Diabetes Self-Management Lay Leader training in May.

Why am I taking all these courses, especially at my age, you ask?  Well, I am enjoying optimum health with no infirmities, as an African American, senior citizen, which is a feat in and of itself. I have accomplished this through my own self-management techniques noninclusive of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.  I know what works for me. I cannot definitively say my personal techniques will work for others, however, taking the courses to learn scientifically proven methods gives me techniques that I can confidently share with others to help them modify their behaviors to reach and attain their health and related  lifestyle goals.

My excellent health allows me to truly live my life to the fullest!!! Waking up everyday full of energy and looking forward to new life experiences is a cornerstone of my existence!  I am so grateful for my life and all the joy I get from those around me, and the happiness I am able to share. I must say, despite the recent automobile accident I was in, and for the first time ever having to cancel my monthly hike, I still feel blessed.  I urge you to take an assessment of your daily activities and pick one thing to modify into a healthier choice.  You will be surprised how one little change can result in major benefits for you!  Give it a try and let me know what you did, and how it is working for you over the next 2 - 4 weeks.  Send it to me here.

Life is precious! I wish you a sacred Good Friday and a forgiving heart for any infractions against you and, of course a mindful Resurrection Day aka Happy Easter. By the way, do you know how this day became to be known as Easter?  Read on to find out...

Peace, love, and joy...

Saturday, April 4, 2015

This is the first time since I have been leading these monthly hikes that I have actually had to totally cancel one of them.  I apologize for the late notice, but I was in an automobile accident and unable to lead this month's hike.

However, you can go to my Meetup sites and see what hikes are scheduled for the month by some of my other hike leaders.  Enjoy your day!   Go here for the links to the Meetup sites

Should you go out, please remember the following:

We practice the Leave No Trace principles... what you carry in, you carry out, with the exception of your picturesque memories of the trail and of course, any photos you may take.

As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and of course comfortable layered, clothing.  Bring a friendly smile, great attitude, open mind, water, snacks and optional lunch!  Please get a good restful night's sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast to help sustain your energy.

It is the leading patient education waiting room media network, located in over 30,000 physician waiting rooms, serving over 70,000 medical practitioners nationwide, and reaching over 200 million patients each year.  Check out the video.
