Life is too short,
Don't ever waste it.

Life is sweet,
Take time to taste it.

Life is a journey,
Find the right path.

Life is entertaining,
Don't be afraid to laugh.

Life is for good times,
Make them last.

Life has it's bad times,
Put them in your past.

Life is chance,
Make sure to take it.

But most importantly...
Life is what you make it.

Our True Nature

Our True Nature,
is a layperson's guide to the National Parks, by a woman of color, who has been to all the places described, and makes it particularly unique through her eyes and footsteps.  It includes places such as Paul Revere's house; the Liberty Bell; John Brown's Fort; the Ocmulgee mounds in Georgia, and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. It describes where the parks are, how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and even the best time of year to visit.

Greetings!

I am soooo very thankful for life

itself...and for you being a part of my life!  I really appreciate your continued support. It keeps me motivated.

As I reflect on 2013 and all the wonderful things for which I am thankful, I can only feel blessed, as I do my best to be a blessing to others.  All the great feedback I get is always so heartwarming, and keeps me going.

I am still enjoying having become an official senior citizen!  I am basking in the memories of the events of 2013, and in the process of preparing for 2014...the celebrations, the trips, the events, and anything else that helps me celebrate life!

At our recent Baby Boomer Blast! I was expressing how joyful I feel about being a senior and assuring those around me that we do not have to be feeble as we get older.  Someone said to me that Cher says there is nothing good about getting old.  My response was, I am not trying to be young, as I believe Cher is trying to be.  I am very optimistic, and believe by simply enjoying where I am in life, along with the mindset to welcome each day with vim and vigor, helps me keep a freshness about life, and results in me feeling young at heart.  I know my limitations, and I am well aware of my age, but that does not stop me, by any means, from discovering new things about myself, overcoming fears, embracing new friendships, and exploring new and exciting adventures!  I implore you to join me and the others who are Living Life to the Fullest!!!

Okay, now for part two of my report from my doctor's visit that I wrote about last month...well I received the results back from the 36 lab tests that were run.  I was well within the normal range for 35 out of 36.  However, there was one that as the doctor stated was 'slightly elevated' - my cholesterol.  So, now of course, I am getting back on the stick to reach my goal of 36 out of 36 results well within normal...without any medications, nor over-the counter drugs.  I will post my results when the time comes.

On that note...I have gotten a number of inquiries about the supplements I take, the ProVitality shown in the sidebar. I will respond to each person individually, however, for now, through the end of the year, to help you prepare for 2014, I am going to offer them at a discount.  The full retail price for a 30-day supply is $50.95.  From the time you receive this newsletter through December 31, I will offer a 30-day box of ProVitality for $43.50.  I swear by them. I think you will also once you have given them time to get into your system.  Get more information about the supplements here.

The Baby Boomer Blast! was so much fun!  I was having such a blast, I didn't take many photos, but here are the few that I took...go here. to see them

OK, I am taking a little break from the travels until next year, but looking at continuing to enjoy life even more as I plan the calendar of events for 2014.  This first ever physical/hard copy 2014 calendar will feature different full color photos of African Americans in Great Outdoor activities for each month, along with monthly observances and celebrations.

As always, my wish for you, is that you have everlasting love, peace, and joy. Check out my updated Lifestyle Blog  and my Facebook posts as I am finally taking time to keep them updated.

Hope you can join me and others in some of the many fun things we continue to do now, and in the new year.  See what is listed below, and visit the Atlanta African American Adventurers website to see some of the many activities in which you can participate.  Don't forget my OPALs website and OPALs Meetup.  I just acquired a new meetup group, the Atlanta African American Baby Boomer Meetup.  Check it out and join me. Help me make it grow into something wonderful!  There are many of us out there, and I am trying to bring us together...Thanks!

I want you to know, that when you join us on any of our adventurous and enjoyable activities, wholesome fun & happiness, good health & fitness, and fantastic friendships are the result!

Hartfield's Hikers December Hike

Stone Mountain
Saturday, December 7th

Rating:  Easy/Moderate
Distance:  5.0 Miles

Temperature Forecast:  Sunny, High 63, 0 chance of rain.

Departure:  9:00a Sharp
Meeting Place:

We will meet inside the park near the west gate by the parking lot near the restrooms, behind Confederate Hall at the base of the mountain...our usual place.

We will hike the Cherokee Trail which explores much of the Natural District around the base of Stone Mountain. As the tradition has begun, Keeping It Wild hikers will join us again this year.

As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and of course, wear comfortable layered clothing, preferably no cotton.  Cotton holds moisture and if and when you perspire, you will be chilled.  Bring water and snacks. According to Weather.com the forecast will be mostly sunny with a high of 56 degrees. Bring water and healthy snacks.

Unless you have a park pass or want to pay $10 to park, you can opt to park at the Sun Trust overflow parking lot, directly across the street from the Stone Mountain MARTA Park & Ride lot, for free.  It is located at E Mountain and 4th streets.  I have spoken with a manager who said he had no problem with us parking there. And besides, the bank is closed on Saturdays. It is a very short walk down E Mountain, directly to the walk-through gate, we will be straight ahead in the open area, near the restrooms, waiting for you.

Please feel free to call me, should you have any questions or concerns.  I can be reached at 678.231.4973.

Don't forget the Leave No Trace principles to which we adhere... what you carry in, you carry out, with the exception of taking your memories of the adventure, your new friendships, and of course, any photos you may take.

Health Tidbits
Sweetwater Creek Hike Group
Rev up your energy! It may be the last thing you feel like doing when you're tired, but exercise -- even a brisk walk -- can be more effective than a nap or cup of coffee at fighting fatigue.

Did you know that fresh bananas are a great energy booster...well, they are!

Hiking Tips and Insights
Male Hiker
Uphill Hiking Tips

Take small steps going uphill
Purposely taking shorter steps than usual will reduce the effort per step to push your body and pack weight upwards and will make the ascent easier.

Downhill Hiking Tips

When going downhill, slow down by leaning back a little and putting your weight down through your heel on each step. It all depends on the type of terrain you are descending, the main thing is to not rush.

The Importance of Layering Your Clothes

Layering your clothing is a tried-and-true way to maximize your comfort in the outdoors. The beauty of this simple concept is that it allows you to make quick adjustments based on your activity level and changes in the weather.  Each layer has a function.

Breaking in Your New Hiking Boots
Hiking BootsYou never want to hike in brand new boots.  Read this article from REI on  how you should break in your new boots.

The Basics of Hydration

Your body is more than 60% water, and even light physical activity can deplete that percentage. No fluid means no function!

This loss of fluid is called dehydration. And hydrating, or adding fluids, is the key to keeping it from happening to you.

How to Choose a Day Pack
REI Flash Pack

For any activity that involves more gear than you can carry in your pocket, especially for hiking, you need a daypack.

Daypacks may look similar at first glance but have lots of functional differences. Read the article from REI that is designed to give you some helpful tips on finding the right one  for your needs.
