Life is too short,
Don't ever waste it.

Life is sweet,
Take time to taste it.

Life is a journey,
Find the right path.

Life is entertaining,
Don't be afraid to laugh.

Life is for good times,
Make them last.

Life has it's bad times,
Put them in your past.

Life is chance,
Make sure to take it.

But most importantly...
Life is what you make it.

Our True Nature
Our True Nature, is a layperson's guide to the National Parks, by a woman of color, who has been to all the places described, and makes it particularly unique through her eyes and footsteps.  It includes places such as Paul Revere's house; the Liberty Bell; John Brown's Fort; the Ocmulgee mounds in Georgia, and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. It describes where the parks are, how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and even the best time of year to visit.

I'm baaack...
I am finally settling down from one of the most adventurous and wonderful years of my life!  I really like this OPALs thing...and becoming a senior citizen.

I used my Medicare card for the first time in October, and had one of the best doctor's visit ever.  At the end of the appointment she told me, "You are so healthy, we do not have a code for you." All of my vital statistics were great, i.e., blood pressure, weight, BMI, plus.  Mind you, with no medications, not even over-the-counter drugs.

You can never convince me that my lifestyle, which includes fun, physical activities like hiking and bicycle riding; eating organic, non-GMO foods; taking all natural dietary supplements; and, surrounding myself with positive and supportive people, that I should be doing anything different!  I love every moment of each day, and am very grateful for all the wonderful people in my life!

I repeat, from what I said last month, this was the BEST summer of my life!  And, reaching the great age of 65 has been the best CELEBRATION of my life!  I am truly Living Life to the Fullest!!! and invite you to do the same!

Yes, I am a proud 'Forever Young' Baby Boomer, and an active member of OPALs...Older People with Active Lifestyles.  And, we, like the gem, are very colorful and unique.

As a matter of fact, to continue to celebrate and share this wonderful life, along with a friend, the two of us have planned our first Baby Boomer Blast! event. See below, or just click here to get the information and register to join us!

OK, I am taking a little break from the travels until next year, but looking at continuing to enjoy life even more as I plan the calendar of events for 2014.  This first ever physical/hard copy 2014 calendar will feature different full color photos of African Americans in Great Outdoor activities for each month, along with monthly observances and celebrations, will first be available for sale at the Baby Boomer Blast! (Print & bring the coupon below to get $5 off).

In the meantime, I am off to the next exciting adventure, which I will tell you about next month... See ya!

As always, my wish for you, is that you have everlasting love, peace, and joy. Check out my updated Lifestyle Blog  and my Facebook posts as I am finally taking time to keep them updated.

Hope you can join me and others in some of the many fun things we do.  See what is listed below, and visit the Atlanta African American Adventurers website to see the many activities in which you can participate this fall and winter!  Don't forget my OPALs website and OPALs Meetup.  If not for you, pass it on to someone who may benefit from the activities.

I want you to know, that when you join us on any of our adventurous activities, wholesome fun & happiness, good health & fitness, and fantastic friendships are the result!

Tallulah is one of the most spectacular canyons in the Southeast, with great hiking trails. We will hike along the rim to all 10 of the overlooks, which includes those with waterfall views, and awesome autumn, colorful foliage.

We will also take the 522 stairs down to the floor of the gorge, and yes, we have to climb the stairs back up...that's a total of 1044 steps. While it is strenuous, there are plenty of landings, many with benches, on which you can rest, and catch your breath.

We will walk over the suspension bridge that crosses the Tallulah River.
We hope to see some of the  expert kayakers, as they enjoy the bi-annual "whitewater releases."

Upon arrival, we will go to the Visitor's Center to view the park's film about the gorge.  It includes heart-racing footage of kayakers and news clips from Wallenda's famous tightrope walk across the gorge.

As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and of course comfortable clothing.  Bring plenty of water, snacks and your lunch.  Please eat a hardy breakfast to help sustain your energy and strength.

Remember...we carpool, so please be prepared to donate $7 - $10 to the driver for gas and parking.  There is a $5 fee for parking unless you go to your local library and check-out a State Park Parking Pass for free parking.

Any questions, please feel free to call me at 678.231.4973.

Don't forget the Leave No Trace principles to which we adhere... what you carry in, you carry out, with the exception of taking your memories of the adventure, your new friendships, and of course, any photos you may take.

Hiking Tips and Insights
Male Hiker
Uphill Hiking Tips

Take small steps going uphill
Purposely taking shorter steps than usual will reduce the effort per step to push your body and pack weight upwards and will make the ascent easier.

Downhill Hiking Tips

When going downhill, slow down by leaning back a little and putting your weight down through your heel on each step. It all depends on the type of terrain you are descending, the main thing is to not rush.

The Basics and Importance of Layering Your Clothes

Layering your clothing is a tried-and-true way to maximize your comfort in the outdoors. The beauty of this simple concept is that it allows you to make quick adjustments based on your activity level and changes in the weather.  Each layer has a function.

Breaking in Your New Hiking Boots
Hiking BootsYou never want to hike in brand new boots.  Read this article from REI on  how you should break in your new boots.

The Basics of Hydration

Your body is more than 60% water, and even light physical activity can deplete that percentage. No fluid means no function!

This loss of fluid is called dehydration. And hydrating, or adding fluids, is the key to keeping it from happening to you.

How to Choose a Day Pack
REI Flash Pack

For any activity that involves more gear than you can carry in your pocket, especially for hiking, you need a daypack.

Daypacks may look similar at first glance but have lots of functional differences. Read the article from REI that is designed to give you some helpful tips on finding the right one  for your needs.
