Inspirational Quote

Life is too short,
Don't ever waste it.
Life is sweet,
Take time to taste it.
Life is a journey,
Find the right path.
Life is entertaining,
Don't be afraid to laugh.
Life is for good times,
Make them last.
Life has it's bad times,
Put them in your past.
Life is chance,
Make sure to take it.
But most importantly...
Life is what you make it.

 | Living Life to the Fullest!!!
|
Greetings! It is now official...I am a 'Senior Citizen'! September 5th is the day! Wow!!! But, you know what? I am still Living My Life to the Fullest!!! and enjoying every moment of it! The age of 'Rejuvenation,' not retirement! I have been celebrating this milestone birthday all year. I have been having so much fun and so many wonderful experiences! To name a few, visiting Belize, visiting the Mayan Ruins, visiting a Mayan Village, visiting a Garifuna Village, sailing on a 46' yacht, getting on an African Watusi Bull at the Bill Pickett Rodeo, going to New York to see Motown the Musical, hiking at the Grand Canyon!!! And, the greatest joys are the new friends I have made, as well as connecting with old friends...this year, this milestone birthday has truly opened a new chapter of my life. I feel like I am aging younger! Doing all the exciting and adventurous things I had never had thought of ever doing. Being open to the possibilities of life has allowed me to gracefully embrace this new status! Let me also mention that to date, it has been confirmed through visits to the doctors...I am in excellent health...no drugs, medications, or prescriptions, no aches or pains!!! I love it!!! It is so apropos that September is 'Healthy Aging Month.' How wonderful is that! Yes, I am an OPAL...Older Person with an Active Lifestyle. And, I accept what is said about OPALs, very colorful and unique gems. Thank you to everyone who has wished me wonderful birthday greetings through cards, facebook, calls and emails. I gratefully and humbly accept them all! Ok, at this age, there is no time to waste, I am off to the next adventure... See ya! As always, my wish for you, is that you have everlasting peace, joy and love. Check out my Lifestyle Blog and my Facebook posts as i try to find timet o keep them updated. | Hartfield's Hikers HEALTHY AGING Monthly Hike
| SEPTEMBER 14 | Saturday Cochran Mills Nature Center TrailsDistance: 3.5 Miles Rated: Easy / ModerateDeparture: 8:00a.m. IHOP (#459)
6902 Londonderry Way
Union City, GA 30291-2035
The Cochran Mills Nature Center charges $3.00 per person. It is actually a privately owned nonprofit organization. We will also have an opportunity to see their wildlife exhibits that features a number of animals - captive, wild, native and exotic. Exhibits also include birds of prey, Egyptian fruit bats, and one of the largest reptile collections in the state of Georgia. FYI...all resident birds have been permanently injured or orphaned and are under the care of certified rehabilitation specialists. and Don't forget, you can go to your local library, use your library card and 'check out,' as you would a book, a Georgia State Parks, Parking Pass. Sometimes they go pretty fast, so you may want to check up front and reserve it for pick-up.
Bring plenty of water, a light healthy lunch, a smile and a friendly disposition, and you are guarantee to have a wonderful outing in the wilderness... WOW! As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots (please, no new shoes or boots...you will be sorry...break them in first!), and of course comfortable layered, clothing.
Don't forget the Leave No Trace principles to which we adhere... what you carry in, you carry out, with the exception of taking your memories of the adventure, your new friendships, and of course, any photos you may take.
Remember... we car pool and each rider is asked to donate $10 toward gas. Feel free to contact me by return email or telephone at 678.231.4973 should you have any questions. You can RSVP here. |

| The Great Georgia Air Show
| October 11 - 13 | Friday - Sunday Atlanta Regional Airport Peachtree City, GA
The Great Georgia Air Show is one of the most popular weekend festivals in Georgia and one of the most highly regarded aviation events in the nation. The Great Georgia Air Show, known to Insiders as GGAS, began as a local fund raiser at the close of the last millennium. While non-profit organizations still benefit financially from airshow revenue and publicity, The Great Georgia Air Show has grown to have a positive financial impact on the entire Greater Atlanta area and has been named a Top 20 Event by the Southeastern Tourism Association.

| Day Hike Packs
|
A day hiking pack has shoulder straps but no waist belt. It is intended to carry lighter loads on the shoulders for which you do not need the waist support. There is no definitive line between hiking day packs and back packs - starting with tiny packs, you can find larger packs, some with hydration systems, some with added chest strap, and some with waist strap. A day pack is only carried on the shoulders, and should be big enough to hold all the gear you need for the day, i.e. lunch, snacks, water, first aid kit, wipes, hand sanitizer, bug spray, sunscreen, etc.. It should not be much bigger - or you will be tempted to fill it up, meaning more weight and strain on you. My favorite is the Flash Pack from REI... check it out.

| Hiking Tips and Insights
| Uphill Hiking Tips
Take small steps going uphill Purposely taking shorter steps than usual will reduce the effort per step to push your body and pack weight upwards and will make the ascent easier.
Downhill Hiking Tips
When going downhill, slow down by leaning back a little and putting your weight down through your heel on each step. It all depends on the type of terrain you are descending, the main thing is to not rush.

| Health Tidbits

Rev up your energy! It may be the last thing you feel like doing when you're tired, but exercise -- even a brisk walk -- can be more effective than a nap or cup of coffee at fighting fatigue.
Did you know that fresh bananas are a great energy booster...well, they are!
