Charlie Pilzer and Takoma Park clients win at 30th annual Wammies

Takoma Park's chief engineer Charlie Pilzer was recognized at the 30th annual Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) awards show and concert held on April 10 in Falls Church, VA. Charlie earned Best Studio Engineer (by our count his eighth Wammie!) and also worked on several other projects that took home awards: Bumpers Jacksons won Best Folk - Traditional Recording for their second album, Too Big World, which was recorded, mixed and mastered by Charlie at Airshow Takoma Park. Four other albums that were mastered by Charlie also won: DC-area songwriter Annette Wasilik's Songs from the Talking House earned best Folk - Contemporary Recording, The Folger Consort's Christmas in New Spain won Best Classical Recording, guitarist Dave Chappell's Dave Chappell & Friends got Best Roots Rock Recording, and The Nighthawks Back Porch Party won Best Blues / Traditional R&B Recording.

Congratulations also to our friends, clients and colleagues Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, Rosa Lamoreaux, Frank Solivan, Tina Chancey, Washington Revels, Bumper Jacksons, Marcy Marxer, Andy Hamberger, Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band, Karen Collins, and Tommy Lepson who also earned Wammies this year, and to everyone who was nominated.

The event also paid tribute to our late friend John Jennings with an all-star group of local musicians performing his material. John was also inducted into the WAMA Hall of Fame during the ceremony.

Thank you to WAMA and the Washington music community!
Boulder's studio build updates

With the impending move to our new studio in the foothills, Airshow Boulder is refocusing. Mastering and restoration have been the core of our business from the earliest days of Airshow. Beginning May 1, the Boulder staff will be Chief Engineer David GlasserSenior Mastering Engineer and Restoration Center Manager Anna Frick, and general manager Ann Blonston. We'll be in the same in-town location until late June. To get in touch, and for bookings, please contact us at: 303-247-9035, or [email protected].

We're sad to say goodbye to Boulder Studio Manager Karen Maye, who brought her cheery style of management to our team, and to our clients for the past two years. We wish her all the best in her new endeavors.

Meanwhile, the build of the new studio continues. Most of the heavy lifting is complete. Now it's time for the details that make the studio work. Read more and check out some pictures in our updated post.

30th MerleFest features Airshow clients

This weekend is the 30th anniversary of MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC. Airshow Boulder was fortunate to work on two projects debuting at this festival. T. Michael Coleman's Pocket (mastered by David Glasser) and Billy Strings's self titled EP (mastered by Anna Frick).

Though he's been an integral part of the acoustic music scene for decades, Pocket is T. Michael Coleman's first solo recording. It features a who's who of bluegrass musicians including Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, and the late Doc Watson for whom T. Michael played bass for so many years. Check out T. Michael's AllMusic bio here.

This is the second project Anna Frick has worked on from the fiery young bluegrasser known as Billy Strings. A true Doc Watson devotee, Billy Strings is a "tattoo covered guitar picker/singer that you surely will be hearing about for years to come" (according to his Facebook page). Find out more about Billy here.

We'll have ordering information in next month's newsletter for these two great projects.

This over-the-top box set contains a complete show from each of the 30 years that the Grateful Dead performed, plus a leather-bound book with a comprehensive historical essay by Nicholas Merriweather. The project was produced by David Lemieux with audio mastered by Jeffrey Norman and Airshow's David Glasser and tape restoration by Plangent Processes. This box set was a Grammy nominee for best packaging.
