I HOPE, I HOPE...
"The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight."
The word "Hope" as it appears in the pages of scripture has a much different meaning than the way we use it today. Children hope they'll get what they want for Christmas. Job-seekers hope they can find that place of employment that will give them the opportunity to advance, and earn the kind of salary they would like to have. Some hope to meet that certain someone, settle down, get married and raise a family. Others hope they can beat their cancer and live long enough to see their grandchildren grow up.
The word hope, the way the world uses it, is a tool to keep you going when you lose your health, or your job and even when you lose someone you love. Hope is a word that can keep you moving forward as you try to press on toward reaching your goals.
The problem with the world's view on hope is that it's based on uncertainty. Hope in all the things I have just mentioned is good, but there is no guarantee you'll get what you want for Christmas, or find that job, or meet that special someone, or enjoy good health. The hopes I've mentioned so far are, are really just wishes.
When the Bible speaks of hope it talks about it in a much different way. It talks about a hope that is something more than a wish, it's an absolute certainty.
I hope (okay, really it's my wish) that you'll be able to join us this weekend as we continue our series on "Unwrapping the Gifts of Christmas" and look at a hope that does not disappoint.
Embracing the journey,
Pastor Rick
