burger-fries.jpg
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has made a preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary dietary source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not "generally recognized as safe"  for use in food. A final decision would mean that the use of these oils in the food supply would be phased out over a number of years. Removal of PHOs from the food supply could prevent up to 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year. FDA is seeking data and information through an open comment forum. Read More

Reports and Resources
Arizona Child Fatality Report Available

The 20th Annual Child Fatality Review report is now available, which examines all 854 deaths of children under the age of 18 in 2012.  The Report reviews the circumstances of each child's death, determines preventability and makes recommendations to save children's lives moving forward.

Although the number of deaths this year is up from last year, Arizona has had a 26% decline in child deaths over the last 8 years, partially attributed to many of the initiatives recommend by the Annual Child Fatality Review Program.  This year's report makes recommendations to families, law enforcement, health care providers, social service agencies, and the communities in which children live.
