Have You Committed?
|
We have officially launched our distraction-free driving campaign
"Commit to Concentrate."
Distracted drivers are risking more than their own life, but also the lives of passengers and other drivers.
Driving is the most dangerous activity we do, which is why it is crucial to concentrate on the road while you are at the wheel.
Protect yourself. Protect the lives of others on the road.
After you sign the pledge, print out a copy to keep with you as reminder of your commitment to concentration.

Sergeant Lee Stancill has been with Greene County Sheriff's Office for eight years and now works as an investigator. The division he is in works on investigating all types of crimes from property crimes to crimes against people. In addition, Sgt. Stancill received specific training from the GBI on investigating Internet crimes against children.
Although Lee Stancill has only been officially a member of Greene County Sherriff's Office for eight years, his involvement in the field began at an early age.
As a young child, Stancill watched and learned from his grandfather and two great grandfathers on both sides of the family who all worked as policemen.
"I've wanted to work for the Sheriff's office every since I was a kid. It has always been what I've wanted to do," Stancill said. "It was ingrained in me. I guess it is a family thing."

Greetings!
As far back as 400 B.C.E., Socrates stated: "Young people now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in the place of exercise." If you are retired, chances are that you have had similar feelings about those of Generation X. You might be alarmed to learn that an FBI study showed that 70% of the Law enforcement work force consisted of Generation X and Millennials. A recent article written by a UGA professor discussed a situation where a local law enforcement agency in Georgia had 4 officers retire in a one month period and the cumulative years of experience that was lost was 107 years. The fact is that the future law enforcement work-force will be much younger and less experienced. It will become increasingly important for managers to become aware of, and understand generational differences as well as making secession training a priority. These types of issues are usually far from the minds of those who think law enforcement training consist of shooting and handcuffs.
In an attempt to help agencies that have a primary role in protecting a school, the sheriff's office will be hosting a training class for law enforcement officers on Responding to an Active Shooter. We realize that our world has had problems with twisted people shooting others in all kinds of places such as schools, malls, restaurants, and so on. I believe that when an active shooter is engaged, it is more important for the first officers on the scene (2 to 4) to immediately eliminate the threat, than to worry about which agency they work for. That is why we will be opening this training to our local troopers, agents, rangers, police, and deputies. When people's lives are at stake there is NO room for politics.
Shortly after I first took office, the public was shocked to hear about the Columbine School shooting that occurred in Colorado on April 20th, 1998. One year later the terror reappeared at Heritage High School in Rockdale County where six students were shot. Like many of you, I too was devastated by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Many of you would also be shocked to learn that since 1992 there have been over 386 school shootings in America which have occurred on, or adjacent to a school campus. These actions have resulted in 570 deaths across our nation with 59% of the victims being between the ages of 10 and 19. Yes, the tragedy seems much worse when the victims are under the age of 10, but this is not a new problem and I need you to wake up to this critical issue and demand that your law enforcement (me included), your commissioners, and your school officials see this as an absolute fiscal priority. I now have a good working relationship with all of these people, but money is tight and priorities matter when YOU say say they matter!
Thank you,
Sheriff Chris Houston

Greene County Sheriff's Office along with other agencies make an arrest in multi-state child sex trafficking case.
|
GBI Press Release
 | | Suspect: 29 yr old Johnathon Nathaniel Kelly |
Decatur Man Arrested on Child Sex Trafficking Related Charges
Crawfordville, GA. - A 29-year-old Decatur man has been arrested by the GBI on charges related to child sex trafficking after a Georgia State Patrol Trooper and a Greene County Sheriff's Deputy stopped a speeding vehicle on Interstate 20 in Taliaferro County. A 17-year-old juvenile female from Birmingham, Alabama was a passenger in the vehicle, and the Deputy noticed that the juvenile displayed the indicators of commercial sexual exploitation of children that he had learned about in recent training. The juvenile eventually told the Deputy that she was being held against her will for sexual purposes. The Greene County Sheriff's Deputy had previously attended training classes hosted by the Governor's Office and the GBI and given by and the Texas Department of Public Safety and GBI agents on the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC).
The Greene County Sheriff's Office then requested assistance from the GBI's Child Sex Trafficking Section. After an investigation at the Taliaferro County Sheriff's Office determined the juvenile was a victim of child sex trafficking, the GBI charged the driver, Johnathon Nathaniel Kelly, with one count of Trafficking of Persons for Sexual Servitude. The investigation also revealed that the juvenile had been sold for sexual purposes in 4 different states since age 12. The FBI has joined the ongoing investigation into Kelly due to the multi-state aspect of the crime...

Are You Prepared for a Disaster?
|
You Can Never Be Too Prepared
Emergencies happen and we want to make sure the community is prepared. We have provided you with this guide on taking the certain steps necessary to prepare for the worst. The steps outlined in this guideline are important to every member of the community, but even more essential to the elderly and people with special needs or disabilities.
#1 Educate Yourself Before you can fully prepare for an emergency, it is vital that you learn about handling the various types of emergencies. Gather information on handling almost any type of emergency from a terrorist attack to a natural disaster. We urge the community to be aware of these potential emergencies and learn how to handle each of specific disasters listed below:
- Droughts
- Earthquakes
- Floods
- Hurricanes
- Landslide & Debris Flow
- Thunderstorms & Lightning
- Tornadoes
- Wildfires
- Severe Weather
#2 Organize & Plan In order to prepare for a disaster it is crucial to be organized. Although there is no way to anticipate an emergency, establish a general plan. Think through your daily routine to determine what you will need. Create a contact list with the numbers of family, friends, hospitals and doctors. Have a mode of transportation and keep a back-up plan in mind. Compile any other important information and write out a detailed plan. Keep a copy of plan as well as a form of identification in a safe place. Lastly, share the plan with your others so that they can be informed as well.
#3 Gather Supplies After a plan has been written out and stored for safekeeping, we encourage you to prepare a supply kit to last for at least a three-day period. What resources will you and your family need in the event of an emergency? Stock up on basis supplies such as food, water, medical supplies, first aid materials and any other essentials...

Court House Safety
"If courts cannot secure the safety of its judicial officers and the public inside the courthouse doors, they surely cannot secure justice for society beyond them."
The security and safety of everyone who occupies the courthouse and its surrounding area is a constant goal of the Greene County Sheriff's Office. Our mission is that every form of business at hand may continue, unencumbered, and that the public may be served and protected to the highest extent. It is the responsibility of the Greene County Sheriff's Office, as set forth in the Georgia Constitution, to provide court security. We work to protect the high visibility of the courthouse complex and courtroom, the constant exchange of defendants, and the security of the judicial and legal cast.
Law enforcement personnel require that the security plans be in place and functioning. Anyone entering through any entrance of the courthouse or its adjacent secured areas is subject to being screened. Aside from the routine screening, a random screening of anyone or everyone may be conducted at the discretion and direction of Court Services personnel. No one may carry a firearm or dangerous weapon inside the Greene County Courthouse complex, except with approval of the Court Services supervisor, Chief Deputy, or Sheriff. Certified peace officers, as defined under Georgia law, will be permitted to carry duty weapons when at the Greene County Courthouse on official law enforcement duty...
