Meet Dorris Brookins:

If you've ever been to the Greene County Courthouse, then you may know Dorris Brookins, who has worked as the Courthouse Security Supervisor for several years.

Brookins began her career almost 25 years ago with Georgia's Department of Corrections. After devoting 15 years to the department, Brookins decided to make a change.

For the past eight years, Brookins has been working with the Greene County Sheriff's Office. As Courthouse Security Supervisor, Brookins strives to protect the safety of the courthouse and manage the building.

"At the end of every day, I take pride in knowing that everyone went home safe for the night," said Brookins.

Most of her days are filled with standard safety procedures, however this is not always the case. On one particularly memorable day, Brookins stopped a male suspect on the run from the police. The man was being chased by several deputies and ran into the courthouse only to find himself with no escape, caught by Dorris Brookins.

"I enjoy my job because it gives me the opportunity to meet a lot of people and talk to them," said Brookins. "Although it a challenge being a woman in the field, I can say that everyone I've worked with is very helpful."

Greetings!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the continued support and confidence in this administration by re-electing me to a fifth term as Sheriff of Greene County.  My goal is to continue to decrease the crime rates and to diligently follow our mission statement of protecting and serving you, the community.

In this November issue of the GCSO Newsletter, we will highlight Deputy Dorris Brookins, our Court House Security Supervisor. In addition, Greene County Sheriff's Office is pleased to introduce a new member of the Force K-9, Oby.

As you all may know, Greene County has experienced some devastating car accidents on highway 44, with many of these crashes resulting in the death of our citizens. After a review of each of these accidents we have concluded that distracted driving, not speed, has been the contributing factor in the majority of these accidents.  We would like to encourage you all to please refrain from any and all distractions when driving. To bring awareness to this pressing issue, the Greene County Sheriffs Office will be launching our distraction-free driver's campaign next month. Our hope is that everyone in our community will take this pledge and commit to distraction-free driving.

With the holidays quickly approaching, the Greene County Sheriff's Office would like to wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving. To ensure a safe Thanksgiving holiday, make sure you take full advantage of our Nixle program by signing up to receive instant electronic safety updates.

New Member added to K-9 Unit

Oby K-9
Our K-9 unit makes up an essential part of Greene County Sheriff's Office. Without the help our highly trained canines, we would not able to discover illegal substances. Which is why we are excited to add a new member to our team, Oby. K-9 Oby is a 15-month-old Belgian Malinois, imported from Holland. This dual-purpose canine provides assistance to our deputies in many ways. K-9 "Oby" is trained in obedience, apprehension, tracking, and handler protection.

In addition, Oby is trained to recognize the odor of Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin, and Meth. Oby allows use to discover these illegal substances through providing us with a passive alert when the odor is recognized. A passive alert means that Oby will sit and stare at the source indicating to our team that there are concealed illegal substances.  Custom Canine Unlimited in Maysville, Ga. is responsible for the training of K-9 Oby and the handler training of Deputy Paquette.
