Congresswoman Lee Energizes and Inspires Participants in Gateways Convening |
More than one hundred attendees at the Gateways East Bay STEM Network's recent Community Stakeholder Convening had the opportunity to hear from Congresswoman Barbara Lee about the importance of the network's efforts to improve STEM educational outcomes for the young people in our community to prepare them for participation in the local STEM economy. Lee challenged the network to not only increase the number of students prepared to enter STEM related jobs, but to also address needs for diversity in the workplace. Congresswoman Lee's full remarks at the Gateways convening can be accessed at https://vimeo.com/51404600. Other elected officials represented at the convening who are supporting the STEM efforts included Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, Sheila Jordan, and Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools, Joseph A. Ovick, and field representatives from the offices of Assemblymembers Joan Buchanan and Nancy Skinner.
Gateways participants' efforts to address such needs during the past year, and plans for the year ahead, are highlighted in its 2012 Annual Report, released at the convening and available on the resources page of the Gateways East Bay STEM Network website: http://www.eastbaystem.net/?q=resources

Enterprising Pathways: Toward a National Plan of Action for Career and Technical Education |
This new 2012 report developed by IBM and Civic Enterprises informs a national debate among business leaders, educators, policymakers and the public about the role of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the United States. To that end, the report provides important historical context, advances an argument for why an updated CTE system will strengthen America's global competitiveness, documents the agreement from all quarters about the steps needed, and offers specific solutions for making CTE more relevant and responsive to the needs of youth and young adults it serves. The report also lays out a roadmap to achieving reforms to strengthen U.S. competitiveness.
The findings and recommendations in the IBM report are important and consistent with Gateways STEM Network's short and long term goals toward meeting the STEM needs of East Bay students as well as our own regional workforce needs. To download a copy of the report:

Interest in the Strive "Cradle to Career" Network Model Grows Across The U.S. |
Gateways staff joined participants from 62 communities in 32 states, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia at Strive's annual conference in Milwaukee last month. Numerous workshops offered opportunities to share knowledge and experiences regarding efforts to transform neighborhoods and outcomes for students through multi-stakeholder networks and collective impact. Highlights from the conference are available at http://strivenetwork.org. The Gateways Partnership is one of five initial, "pioneer" cradle-to-career demonstration sites affiliated with Strive. Initial seed funding from Strive/Living Cities supported the convening of a group of stakeholders across the East Bay who co-created the Gateways "cradle to career" roadmap and indicators of student success. Since these early years, Gateways has secured funding for the Promise Neighborhood effort which, although limited to a portion of Hayward, represents a powerful 'proof of concept' for the change Gateways partners hope to bring about across the East Bay. Meanwhile, Gateways has also developed the East Bay STEM Network in which partners are working to address students' success in STEM across Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. |
East Bay STEM Network Delegation Shares Strategies at CSLNet Annual Conference
|
The Gateways East Bay STEM Network is one of the six original regional alliances recognized by and affiliated with the statewide California STEM Learning Network (CSLNet). The California STEM Summit, CSLNet's annual conference held in San Diego, California October 15-16th provided an opportunity for a delegation from our local network to share lessons learned from this "early pioneering" work. By sharing the differing perspectives of stakeholders and their experiences as the regional network has grown and developed, our region hopes to accelerate progress in other regions across the state now in the early stages of development. The East Bay STEM Network staff wishes to thank the following individuals for contributing to the growth of the statewide network by co-presenting at this workshop: Dr. Pam Comfort, Associate Superintendent of Schools, Contra Costa County, Hilary Dito, STEAM Coordinator, Contra Costa County Office of Education, Beth Yeager, Ph.D, Consultant, Center for Literacy and Inquiry in Networking Communities (LINC) Gevirtz Graduate School of Education University of California, Santa Barbara, Jackie Shonerd, Region IV After School Specialist, Alameda County Office of Education, Janet Auer, Community Engagement Specialist, Chevron, Etta Heber, Director of Education, Chabot Space & Science Center and Robert Curtis, Director, Integrated Middle School Science Partnership, Alameda County Office of Education, CSU East Bay
