Whole Person Care Training Series
Smoky and the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) are collaborating with regional stakeholders to improve healthcare for individuals with behavioral health needs over the next three to five years.
The goals
- Enabling behavioral health, intellectual/developmental disability and healthcare providers to gain knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively incorporate evidence-based whole person care (WPC) models into practice
- Improving communication between primary care and behavioral health/IDD providers
- Increasing collaborative care to ensure improved access to healthcare and behavioral healthcare, including using effective care management/ coordination approaches
- Teamwork training for inter-professional collaborative practice
- Managing the distinct difference in using electronic health records and healthcare information systems between primary care and behavioral health
- Identifying sustainable collaborative/ integrated care models for the region
How?
- Training a workforce of directly contracted LME/MCO providers, credentialed LME/MCO practitioners, LME/MCO staff, peer support specialists, healthcare providers and residents in 23 counties
- Offering WPC through continuing education and patient-centered practice teams using systematic and cost-effective population health approaches, informed through shared data, for individuals Smoky serves
What to do now?
- Register to attend the WPC programs scheduled for this spring.
- Aim to train at least 10 to 15 percent of your organization.
- Core training series includes:
- Whole Person Care Foundations (The evening training on April 25 and May 25 is two-part; you must attend both.)
- Team-Based Whole Person Care
- Chronic Disease Care Academy for WPC
- Population Health Management:Social Determinants of Health
- Quality Improvement Fundamentals:An Overview for Whole Person Care
- If funding is a barrier, scholarships are available.
- The Foundations Class is FREE.

Other classes are low cost, about $45 to $55. Smoky is covering remaining costs. We're investing in providers because we believe these classes carry important benefits.
How to register for a course (pre-registration is required for all classes)
- Go to mahec.net.
- Click on the orange "Continuing Education" tab.
- Under the picture on the left-hand side, in orange, select "Register/Search for a Course."
- Type in the box by keyword: "whole person care". A list of WPC courses will display below the "Submit" button.
- Click "details" after the title of your selected program. Under the title, you'll see several tabs to help you navigate through course information.

- Registration
- Refunds/cancellations (MAHEC's policies)
- On the description page, a button links to a PDF brochure with more information.
- Agenda
- Credit statements
- Registration form
If you're registering multiple people, it's best to print the brochure and have each person complete his or her information, then fax or scan/email them together.
To register online, click the "Registration" tab.
- You must check the box stating, "I have read and agreed to MAHEC's Refund/Cancellation policy."
- Select the session(s) you will attend. Continue to step 2.
- Enter your information. Your Social Security Number is required to track your continuing education credits. Continue to step 3.
- Select all credits you would like (you must select at least one credit). Continue to step 4.
- Select the fee(s) that apply to you. Continue to step 5.
- Review your order
- "Continue Shopping" if you want to register for more than one program. This takes you to the search page to begin a new registration.
- "Check Out" if you are finished. Fill in payment information if needed.
