Message from Gary Rust '83
Fellow Alumni:

Greetings from 50 Oak Street.

I hope that everyone is having an amazing summer. As we prepare to begin a new academic year, I'd like to welcome our newest group of alumni: 168 members of the class of 2014.  As a sign of support for SFCM, the class made a gift of $1,150. Our newest alumni have set a wonderful example about the importance of supporting their alma mater.

In addition to the class of 2014's gesture, Gordon Getty '62, this year's honorary doctorate recipient, made a $1 million challenge grant to support the new strategic vision & plan unveiled during the Presidential Evening in the spring. I implore you to take a moment to review the document if you haven't had a chance. Exciting highlights include a residence hall; new curricula; new initiatives in Technology, Media and Improvisational Music; and a potential long term partnership with the renowned Merola Program at the Conservatory. The challenge was successfully met in June thanks to the SFCM community.

Alumni have also made big news for their artistic endeavors. Telegraph Quartet and Pre-College alumna Hilda Huang are featured in this newsletter for their competition wins. Earlier this summer, faculty member Indre Viskontas '08 appeared on a City Arts & Lectures broadcast discussing her ongoing work of applying neuroscience to music. Viskontas is also a frequent contributor to Mother JonesCello Street Quartet recently served as cultural ambassadors to Kosovo, Hungary, and Russia as part of the U.S. State Department's Music Abroad program. Orchestral rock band The Family Crest was recently named as a favorite new band by NPR's All Things Considered and embarked upon a successful summer tour.

As summer ends and we move toward the 2014-2015 academic year, alumni continue to lead the way. The Alumni Recital Series begins on September 12th with a baroque-inspired concert featuring Erica Schuller '09 and MUSA at 8:00 pm in the Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall. A pre-concert alumni reception on the Deleage level at 7:00 pm will kick-off the new year. Please join us for what is sure to be an amazing performance. Alumni will also headline this year's Conservatory Gala on March 23, 2015. Elza van den Heever '04 and Warren Jones '77 lead the way at SFCM's premiere event.

Now is a great time to re-connect.  Please consider attending an event, sending in an update, viewing the website, or taking a tour.

Warmly,

Gary A. Rust, M.D. (B.M., piano, '83)

2014-2015 Alumni Recital Series
Pre-College alumnus Matt Haimovitz and Lisa Delan '89 in performance

Some Conservatory alumni stake out careers as classical soloists. Others form chamber groups that may mix standard rep with startling new sounds. This year's Alumni Recital Series celebrates graduates who pursue their talent and vision to the limit... no matter where it leads.
