Progress on GPCI (2013), federal policy affecting health insurance for students with assistantships, and student debt
Barbara Knuth, senior vice provost and dean of the Graduate School, updated the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) Oct. 24 on progress of the Graduate and Professional Community Initiative (GPCI), announced an update to federal policy affecting health insurance for students with assistantships, and shared data about graduate student debt.
"The GPSA has been an effective advocate for the graduate and professional student community and one whose input we frequently seek for issues ranging from stipend increases and graduate and professional student housing to the climate for graduate students at Cornell," Knuth said.
"When the GPSA submitted the Graduate and Professional Community Initiative to improve graduate student and professional student life, Cornell listened. We partnered with the GPSA to create a multi-pronged effort to address student concerns," she continued.

Dear Dean,
I've been at Cornell for 8 weeks, but my wife just moved here. She graduated in May, then finished a research project at her alma mater. She wants a similar job here, but she doesn't know where to start looking.
She is also concerned about meeting people and developing her own circle of friends. I don't know where to tell her to meet people beyond my graduate field.
Can you help us figure out the next steps?
Sincerely,
New Grad Student

The Student Advocacy Committee (SAC) of the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) is an available resource for students. The GPSA is the graduate student branch of the shared governance system at Cornell, and the SAC addresses issues that affect the well-being of graduate students, such as mental health, housing, and academic environment.
While students are always welcome to reach out to the GPSA via their field representatives, starting this semester, the SAC is also offering a service to students who are involved in a grievance procedure case; upon request, a committee member can accompany the student during proceedings and provide moral support through the process.
To clarify, we are simply offering to accompany a student during proceedings for the purpose of moral support, in case they do not have a friend willing to do so. We are NOT advising students with regard to specific actions to take, and will redirect students to appropriate channels if they have questions.
You can email the SAC at [email protected] for more information about the committee, the assembly, and other resources on campus.
