Graduate Students Earn Record Number of NSF Fellowships

With 249 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRF) recipients on campus this year, Cornell is giving its graduate students an edge in competing for the prestigious awards.

The total number of students with NSF GRFs at Cornell has risen steadily, from 81 in 2008-09 to 249 in 2015-16. The NSF currently awards 2,000 fellowships annually, providing $34,000 in funding for each of three years.

Lemelson-MIT Student Prize

 

The Lemelson-MIT Program is searching for the most inventive students to apply for the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize. The competition is open to teams of undergraduate students and individual graduate students nationwide who have tested prototypes of tech-based inventions in four categories: food and agriculture, consumer devices, healthcare, and transportation.

 

Graduate student winners will receive $15K and winning undergraduate teams will win $10K. All winners will be rewarded with national media exposure and exposure to the investment and business communities, among other benefits.

 

Applications are open now through October 13, 2015.

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Academic Diversity - Fall deadline


 

The Postdoctoral Fellowship for Academic Diversity Program is a competitive program whose goal is to increase the diversity of the community of scholars devoted to academic research at both the University of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  


 

Both organizations seek to attract promising researchers and educators from different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, and other diverse populations whose life experience, research experience and employment background will contribute significantly to their academic missions. 


 

Fellowships are available for postdoctoral training in all areas of study at either Penn or CHOP. Successful candidates will receive mentored scholarly and research training as well as courses and workshops to enhance their research success skills and prepare them for a faculty position in a major university.

Campus Sustainability Seeking Student Speaker

Volunteering in the Community

Becoming a volunteer is a great way to be engaged not only at Cornell, but in the local area. Amy Somchanhmavong from the Cornell Public Service Center will present to our graduate student spouses/partners who are interested in learning how to become a volunteer. Learn what the volunteering process is, common volunteering roles that you may want to pursue, and what the Cornell Public Service Center can do for you. Also, Tompkins Time Traders (T3) will be present to introduce their service as they are an organized exchange system serving all ages, through which members exchange Time Credits (TC).  
Open to graduate and professional students as well.

Destination Imagination Informational Meeting

Do you enjoy outreach? Do you like to work with kids on developing teamwork, critical thinking, or innovation? Do you want to teach skills like sewing, painting, script writing, woodworking, and more? Have you ever participated in creative problem solving programs like Destination Imagination (DI) or Odyssey of the Mind (OM)?

  

Join a group of graduate students, staff, faculty, and others who are interested in helping to grow the Destination Imagination creativity & problem solving program in the Ithaca and surrounding areas!

  

We are looking for motivated individuals who want to be involved in Ithaca DI program development (such as helping to lead event days, team building activities, etc.) as well as infrastructure development (such as fundraising, growth, etc.). There are many opportunities to get involved, from small to large time commitments.

  

We'll have an informational meeting Thursday, October 1 at 6:00pm in Physical Sciences Building 416. Come and learn more, and share your own ideas for developing this new outreach program in Ithaca! If you would like to get involved and cannot make this meeting, please email Abby Goldman at agoldman@nydi.org.
