From the Graduate School Registrar:

The Graduate School provides grants to all research graduate students who are invited to present papers or posters at professional conferences. Award amounts are based on geographic location, not actual expenses (i.e., a student attending a conference in Italy may receive the full $675, but a student attending a conference in Washington, D.C., may receive $225). Awards will not, under any circumstances, exceed $675. The Graduate School tries to fund most requests from students who meet the eligibility criteria and observe the application procedures.

Do you love teaching and want that to be a large part of your career? Would you like a low-pressure, low-commitment opportunity to pursue that interest over the summer?
Summer PROFessional Development is a community of grad students and postdocs who are interested in teaching in higher education. We'll meet once a week for about an hour to talk about teaching and how to get a job at a college or university that emphasizes it. We'll discuss topics such as:
- Where to find resources (and funding!) for professional development related to teaching,
- Why it can be important to do a research postdoctoral fellowship before applying for a faculty position at a four-year college,
- What application materials such as "Teaching Philosophy Statements" and "Diversity Statements" actually are, and
- How to get your foot in the door by teaching or guest lecturing at local colleges during your time at Cornell.
Come meet with others who share a passion for teaching! All grad students and postdocs are invited to join the community. We'll meet outside whenever the weather allows, and snacks will be provided at each session.
This learning community is sponsored by the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CU-CIRTL), and will be facilitated by Shoshanna Cole (PhD in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2015), who is a visiting Assistant Professor at Ithaca College in 2015-2016.
Our first meeting will be 3:30pm on Friday, June 19 at the Dairy Bar (free ice cream!). We'd appreciate an RSVP (to shoshe@astro.cornell.edu), but feel free to come to this or any other discussion, whether or not you let us know ahead of time.
