"Microbes surround our lives," began Ph.D. student Fo Sheng Hsu's presentation on his research into Ligonella, a "bad" bacteria that is able to disguise itself in the human body.
The reaction from the crowd of about 100 people and the combined scores of four judges signaled Hsu's success, and he was awarded the first-place prize of $1500 in Cornell Graduate School's first annual Three Minute Thesis, or 3MT, competition.
Ph.D. student Nick Cheney took home the first and second place awards for the Three Minute Thesis competition.

From the Graduate School Registrar:
|
The Graduate School provides grants to all research graduate students who are invited to present papers or posters at professional conferences. Award amounts are based on geographic location, not actual expenses (i.e., a student attending a conference in Italy may receive the full $675, but a student attending a conference in Washington, D.C., may receive $225). Awards will not, under any circumstances, exceed $675. The Graduate School tries to fund most requests from students who meet the eligibility criteria and observe the application procedures.
