We are pleased to invite you to the Spring Recognition Reception, hosted by the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) and the Graduate School, to honor the work of the GPSA and the GPCI Working Groups over the past two years. The reception is Tuesday, April 21 from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Big Red Barn.
Please let us know if you will attend: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=79rzv7nab&oeidk=a07eaq981ln050dbc1e
The Graduate and Professional Community Initiative (GPCI) was presented by the GPSA in March 2013 as "a collaborative, comprehensive, and strategic vision" for the Cornell graduate and professional student community. Since that time, eight Working Groups representing the eight GPCI topic areas and comprising 75 students and staff from across Cornell have met to discuss and prioritize actions, develop partnerships, identify resources, and implement actions, activities, and programs. In addition, the Working Group members are identifying and implementing mechanisms to evaluate progress on the GPCI recommendations. We oversee the work of these eight groups as GPCI Executive Committee co-chairs appointed by President Skorton.
We hope you will join us to celebrate this progress and the efforts of these individuals and groups. We look forward to seeing you on April 21.

If you are a PhD student considering changing your program to a master's degree or leaving your program early, and are wondering what the steps are for making this decision, join us for lunch and a discussion on:
- Common reasons why PhD students may want to consider changing or leaving their degree program
- Cornell policies and practices that can inform your decision
- Approaches for researching the career implications of changing your degree program
- Strategies to successfully navigate potentially difficult conversations with your advisors and prospective employers

Thanks to the generosity of graduate alumni, the Graduate School has gift income available to assist graduate students with the costs of intensive summer language instruction in a language other than English for Summer 2015. The Graduate School anticipates making 8 to 10 awards of $500 to $2,000 each to supplement department awards. Because of the large number of requests for funding each year, this is a competitive process. Priority is given to students who must obtain language proficiency prior to the Fall 2015 semester in order to initiate or complete dissertation/thesis research. Successful applicants will make a clear and compelling case as to:- the importance of the language instruction to the research project;
- why it was not possible to pursue the language instruction at Cornell during the regular academic year; and
- the advantages of the program selected. A letter of recommendation from the student's special committee chair addressing these issues is also required. Applicants who can demonstrate financial support from the field/department or other sources will be given special consideration.
Application forms are available at http://www.gradschool.cornell.edu/sites/gradschool.cornell.edu/files/field_file/gradform_f2.pdf. Applications should be submitted to the Graduate Student Service Office, ([email protected]) 143 Caldwell Hall, no later than 4:30 p.m. April 30. Fields may nominate more than one student, but requests must be ranked prior to submission to the Graduate School. Awards will be announced by mid-May.

Ability and Diversity in the Academy and the Cognitive Economy
- DATE: Wednesday, April 22, 2015
- TIME: 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- LOCATION: Uris Auditorium, Reception to follow in Banfi's
Many believe that elite academic institutions face a tradeoff between ability and diversity, between hiring the best and being inclusive or representative. This logic rests on two premises: first that individual ability can be measured with some degree of accuracy and second that the best team consists of the best individuals. The first premise has no shortage of critics. In this talk, Dr. Page will unpack the second premise: that the best teams, groups, cohorts, and communities consist of the highest ability individuals (assuming that ability can be measured). Page argues that for cognitive tasks such as problem solving, prediction, and idea generation, group performance cannot be decomposed into the sum of individual abilities and that the collective or group's success requires diverse participants.
Scott Page is Professor of complex systems, political science and economics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research focuses on how diversity improves performance and decision making. He is the author of The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools, and Societies, and of Diversity and Complexity, which provides an introduction to the role of diversity in complex adaptive systems.

Friday April 24th at 7 pm in Dewitt Park.
Take Back the Night is a march, rally and speak out against sexual assault, domestic violence, rape and child sexual abuse. At this event, you can show your support for survivors of abuse and envision an end to this violence in our community.
The theme of Take Back the Night this year is community mobilization to recognize the important role every community and each of its members has in creating a society where no one has to be afraid of being abused by a partner or sexually assaulted. I hope you and other members in your organization will be able to attend the event. It's a great opportunity to raise awareness, to hear survivors' stories, to show support for survivors, and to raise your organization's voice in these issues.
We will be hosting poster making for the event in WSH beginning at 5:00pm. The march will leave from Cornell at 6:30 and meet up at DeWitt Park with all of the other marches by 7:00pm.
For information, check out the website or the Facebook event.
