Kudos

Congratulations to Jennifer Novotney, a Cornell graduate student who was voted the 2014 Chemistry Champion by a live audience and by viewers over a live video stream.

In an effort to find and train promising science communicators, the American Chemical Society (ACS) hosts the Chemistry Champions competition. Novotney, who spoke on the importance of polymers to everyday life and her research using polymer materials to detect substances like the explosive TNT, will receive a paid trip to Washington, DC, to tour the ACS headquarters and be filmed as a host for an upcoming ACS Reactions video (www.youtube.com/user/ACSReactions).

She will also host a future ACS Webinar (http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/events.html). And she will be a featured speaker at an upcoming event organized by the National Academy of Sciences' The Science and Entertainment Exchange (http://www.scienceandentertainmentexchange.org/) to share chemistry research insights with members of the entertainment industry.

Voice and Influence Luncheon Series: What Works for Women at Work

  • Wednesday, November 19th from 12:15 - 1:30 PM
  • G01 Biotech
  • Lunch is provided - Please RSVP

Many of the hurdles women face at work can be categorized into four patterns of bias. By seeing these patterns, women can stop feeling like their set-backs are purely personal failings, and start using the strategies outlined by Joan C. Williams, a distinguished professor of law at UC Hastings. Drawn from interviews with more than a hundred successful women, the strategies presented in this Voice & Influence Luncheon are practical tools for women to succeed at work now. Join CBE Women in discussing "What Works for Women at Work".

The Voice and Influence Luncheon Series began in Spring 2014 at Cornell as a way to bring graduate students at Cornell together to explore solutions for workplace bias, participate in professional-development activities, and build a strong network of supporting relationships throughout the campus.  Co-sponsored by CBE Women, GPWomeN, and the Graduate School.
