January 2014 Degree Candidates 

The eleventh annual December Recognition Event for January '14 Graduates will be held on Saturday, December 21st, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a reception from 11:15 a.m. - noon.

 

This is a special event enjoyed by students and families.  There is no limit to the number of guests who may attend the event and there are no tickets.


If you plan to attend, you must:

 

  • Order cap & gown by 11/15 ($10 late fee after 11/15)
  • RSVP to attend Recognition Event by 12/18
  • RSVP to attend additional college events

 

Please arrive at Barton Hall by 9:15 a.m. on 12/21, wearing your cap and gown and carrying your hood.  You will check-in and assemble for the procession. PhD candidates will be hooded on the stage.

Upcoming Dates and Deadlines

The thesis and dissertation submission deadline is January 10, 2014 for students planning to graduate in January 2014.  All theses and dissertations must be submitted, reviewed, and approved in Graduation Manager by noon on January 10, 2014.

Participate in the GradsHaveDebt2 Nationwide Call Congress Event on December 4th, 2013 on the issue of graduate student debt. Join members of the GPSA at the Big Red Barn any time between 9am-5pm on December 4th to call your congressional representatives. Help us inform and educate members of Congress and increase public awareness about graduate and professional student loan issues. Even if you've never called your representatives before, we will make it easy by providing the scripts and helping you find your representatives!

Graduate School Write-Ins

Graduate School Write-Ins are back in session starting on December 2
nd until the end of the semester from 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM at the Big Red Barn.  Please make sure that you sign-in with your writing goals for the period of time you'll write that day and then sign out when you leave and indicate how well you did in meeting your writing goals.  Writing information will be available in an inspirational environment.  Also, to help sustain you, free coffee will be available.

Cornell Outdoor Education will be offering Stress Busters again this semester December 9-12th, 2013

Flu Vaccine

Gannett is offering FREE flu shots and mist to all registered students at FLU CLINICS located throughout campus. All you need to bring is your CORNELL ID. Check the schedule on the Gannett website for a clinic near you! Check frequently as the schedule is updated often.

AIDS Panel (Part of Cornell AIDS Awareness Week)

Becky and Butch, from the Southern Tier AIDS Program, will be sharing their experiences, challenges, and lessons-learned during their lives with HIV.  They will also bring literature and provide additional educational resources.  Since 1984, the Southern Tier AIDS Program has presented thousands of prevention programs in many different settings including prisons, hospitals, schools, churches, business and industry, homeless shelters, and community centers. Their mission to prevent HIV infections and support those living with HIV and AIDS has remained constant.  Open to the entire Cornell Community.  Refreshments will be served.  Co-Sponsored by Cornell Minds Matter.

 AUDITION FOR THE 2014 PRODUCTION OF THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES!

 

The Vagina Monologues is a collection of stories based on interviews with women throughout the world about their passionate, amusing, devastating, emotional, and empowering relationships with their vaginas. The actual production will take place in March 2014, with rehearsals starting next semester.

Jeffrey S. Lehman Fund for Scholarly Exchange with China

 

Applications are now available. Unlike previous years, the application process is now web-based and must be done via the International Gateway. 

 

Tenured and tenure-track faculty and Cornell graduate students are eligible to apply.   The deadline is January 31, 2014.

Postdoc Fellowship with the Cornell Population Center

 

The Cornell Population Center (CPC) invites applicants for the Frank H.T. Rhodes Post-doctoral Fellowship.  The start date for the position will be August 15, 2014 and will be funded for 2 years, subject to a satisfactory first year evaluation. The postdoctoral associate will have access to the full range of university resources and receive an annual salary of $50,000 plus benefits and a modest research/travel account.

Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program (Pre-dissertation)

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) program supports graduate students in formulating effective doctoral dissertation research proposals that contribute to the development of interdisciplinary fields of study in the humanities and social sciences.

The DPDF Program offers two competitions for each fellowship cycle:

  • The Faculty Field Competition, held each fall to select research fields and faculty research directors who will lead the trainings during the fellowship year; and
  • The Student Fellowship Competition, held each winter to select students who will participate in the training program.

Buttrick-Crippen Fellowship 
 
The John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines at Cornell University is accepting applications for the Buttrick-Crippen Fellowship.  This teaching fellowship provides a full year of support during which the Fellow can devote him- or herself to the study and practice of teaching composition within and beyond the context of his or her discipline. Supporting materials should be submitted (101 McGraw Hall) by January 8, 2014.

Cornell-Heidelberg Exchange Fellowships for the 2014-2015 Academic Year

Two Exchange Fellowships for study at the University of Heidelberg/Germany carry tuition and fees plus a monthly stipend of 700 Euro for ten months. In addition, the University of Heidelberg will cover the fees for a preparatory language course beginning in September (participants will receive an additional monthly stipend) and, if desired, for a language course that is offered throughout the academic year.

 

The German academic year customarily runs from mid-October to mid-July with a two month break from mid-February to mid-April between semesters.

 

The competition is open to graduating seniors and current graduate students, from all academic units in the university (students interested in taking courses at the school of medicine should contact Professor Paul Fleming, [email protected], immediately). Applicants must have a good knowledge of the German language (e.g. advanced/B2 level) by the beginning of the German academic year in October.

 

Application material must include CV (complete with local address, telephone number and e-mail address), transcript, a brief rationale for study abroad (circa 1- 2 pages, single-spaced), one letter of recommendation from a professor in the student's field, and the completed application form (contact Miriam Zubal, 183 Goldwin Smith Hall (255-4047, [email protected]) to request the application form).
