Spring 2014 Pre-Enrollment Begins October 30
Graduate students may pre-enroll for Spring 2014 courses beginning October 30, 2013 at 7:00 a.m. Pre-enrollment will continue through Friday, November 1, 2013 4:30 p.m.
Your may verify your appointment time this week in Student Center. If you have questions about your appointment time, or if you don't have an appointment time, please contact the Office of Student Services at the Graduate School at gradstudserv@cornell.edu. Pre-enrollment will be available for all currently registered graduate students who are not expected to graduate January 2014.

November 1: Deadline for Spring 2014 In absentia petitions
In absentia status provides an opportunity for graduate students to engage in approved study in a location at least 100 miles away from the university's Ithaca campus during the academic year while continuing to work under the guidance of the special committee. Students requesting this status must submit a complete form with supporting documentation and signatures to the Office of Students Services, 143 Caldwell Hall by Friday, November 1st.

November 1: Deadline for Conference Grants for participation during December Student presenting at an accredited conference may submit an application for one funding award per year. Award amounts are based on location. Please note that the deadlines for these awards are firm. Conference grants are due the 1st of the month (or next business day if 1st falls on a weekend day) prior to conference month. Applications received after the deadline will be awarded a maximum of 1/2 the conference amount. The start date of the conference is used to determine the deadline for submission. The Lemelson-MIT National Collegiate Student Prize Competition is open to students nationwide who have inventions in one of two categories:
- The "Cure it!" Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for inventions that can improve health care.
- The "Use it!" Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for inventions that can improve consumer devices and tools.

ASIAN 5505: Methodology of Asian Language Learning and Teaching
This course presents theories of language teaching and learning, and shows how they apply to Asian language course structure, classroom instruction, and assessment techniques. Students will observe classes taught by experienced teachers, discuss language learning theory and practice, and design and implement their own class activities. This course is a requirement for all graduate students slated for a Teaching Assistant position in Chinese, Hindi and Urdu, Japanese, and Korean languages. (LL)

CU Language House seeks candidates for paid Native Speaker positions Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and Arabic
Are you a native speaker of any of these languages? If so, you may be able to get a FREE room and a partially subsidized meal plan by serving as a Native Speaker in the Language House for the 2013-14 academic year.
The goal of the Language House is to provide a setting in which students can become fluent in one or more of the target languages. Each Native Speaker serves as a language mentor in matters related to the target language, and as an activity coordinator in matters related to relevant cultures. Leadership Course
ALS 5100, 2 credits, Spring 2014
Cornell students are often placed into leadership positions immediately after graduation. ALS 5100 is a 2-credit course offered by professionals in Organizational Development and by an experienced department chair with the intention of providing leadership skills to navigate the first few years on the job. The course helps identify one's individual strengths and weaknesses, practices how to build and manage teams, explores the dimensions of cultural diversity, provides skills for managing conflict, and examines the meaning of true leadership. ALS 5100 meets just once a week (Friday mornings) for three hours, and will be completed before Spring Break. The course (Leadership Development for Life Scientists) is appropriate for any student (including non-biologists) who expects to be supervising or leading an organization sometime after they graduate from Cornell.

Workshop Leaders for Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Applications due November 1, 2013
Expanding Your Horizons is a one day conference on April 12th, 2014 aimed at getting 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls interested in science. We are looking for enthusiastic undergraduate and graduate students to put together and lead math, engineering, and science workshops at the 2014 conference. Each workshop should be about an hour and include a hands-on activity appropriate for the targeted age group. New this year, we will also be looking for people to lead science demos. Demonstrations will be 5-30 minutes long and occur multiple times throughout the day. For examples, see the descriptions as well as some lesson plans from previous applications. If you are interested in coming up with and leading a workshop, formal applications will be due by Friday, November 1, 2013.
