Office Hours with President Skorton and Vice President Murphy

  • Location: 300 Day Hall 
Space is limited to about 10 students.  The meetings begin with introductions followed by a group discussion.

Pre-Enrollment for Fall 2013  

 

Pre-enrollment for Fall 2013 for current graduate students will open on Wednesday, April 3rd at 8:00 a.m. and will end on Friday, April 5th at 4:30 p.m.  For class numbers, please refer to Cornell's Courses of Study catalog

Summer Registration

Now through mid-July, graduate students should self-enroll through their Student Center for Summer 2013.  We encourage students to enroll now and not delay.

 

Graduate students must register with the Graduate School for the Summer 2013 term if any of the following conditions apply: 

  • They are receiving financial aid during the summer (fellowships, summer loans, assistantships, travel grants, or tuition awards);
  • They wish to use campus facilities; or
  • They are off campus but need to be registered for summer study. 

Students who do not register for summer will also be subject to FICA tax (OASDI and Medicare) withholding from Assistantship Payroll Appointments.  There is no charge for summer registration with the Graduate School. To register simply enroll in the Graduate School's "Thesis/Dissertation Research" summer course (class numbers 1697, 1698, 1699, and 1700) via Student Center.

 

GPSA Faculty Awards 2013

The GPSA is currently seeking nominations for the 2013 Annual Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Advising, and Mentoring of Graduate and Professional Students.

 

Deadline for submission of nomination letters is Monday, April 8th, 2013.

Annie Leonard and the "Story of Stuff" 

 

The Graduate School is hosting a film screening, lecture, discussion and reception with Annie Leonard, sustainability expert and creator of the award-winning "Story of Stuff" on Monday, April 15th at 5:00 p.m. in Call Auditorium, Kennedy Hall.  Free tickets are available at Willard Straight Hall Tickets Office and at the Graduate School Deans Office, 350 Caldwell Hall starting Monday, April 1st.  

 

Annie Leonard's documentaries, beginning with the world-renowned, animated film, "The Story of Stuff", transform complex issues into understandable challenges and have been viewed more than 15 million times by audiences worldwide. "The Story of Stuff" exposes the connections between environmental issues and social issues, calling for the creation of a more sustainable and just world.

May 2013 Ph.D. candidates who plan to participate in the commencement ceremonies should visit http://commencement.cornell.edu/May/ for more information.  PhD candidates must RSVP for the Saturday hooding ceremony.   

 

Ph.D. candidates who plan to graduate in August 2013 also may participate in the Saturday hooding ceremony upon request.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and widely considered the father of the modern environmental movement, Dr. E.O.Wilson will visit Cornell's Graduate School on April 19th as part of the 2013 Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin lecture series.

Graduate writing consultants are available weekdays and evenings to discuss specific pieces of writing or questions about writing.   

Cornell graduate students can request one-time or on-going appointments for one-on-one assistance to refine and develop strategies for drafting and revising scholarly writing.

IRB Offering Protocol Help Sessions/Workshops

 

IRB office is now offering on-campus help sessions/workshops for researchers who are planning to submit, or are in the process of revising, new applications (protocols) for IRB review, amendments to approved protocols, or annual renewals of their human participant research projects.

 

The workshops are an open, drop-in format and will be held at various locations on campus for the convenience of researchers in different departments, but all researchers are welcome to attend any of the scheduled sessions.

Continued through the end of the Spring semester!

 

Available Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. in the Big Red Barn, the Dissertation Write is a place where you can join others working on writing goals and deadlines.  Be a part of a writing community so that you are able to become more productive, accountable and spend your time writing. Upcoming Forums on the Future of Academic Publishing

 

As recently featured in the Cornell Chronicle (http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Jan13/LIBgiveaway.html), Cornell University Library is sparking discussion about alternatives to traditional scholarly publishing models by distributing free copies of two new books and hosting campus forums. The Library has fulfilled requests from faculty and grad students for over 120 copies of Kathleen Fitzpatrick's /Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy/ (NYU Press, 2011) and Peter Suber's /Open Access/ (MIT Press, 2012).
