Deadline for Thesis and Dissertation Submissions

The thesis and dissertation submission deadline is January 11, 2013 for students planning to graduate in January 2013.  All theses and dissertations must be submitted, reviewed, and approved in Graduation Manager by noon on January 11th. 2013.  

 

Students can participate in the December 15th Recognition Ceremony if they are planning on a January degree conferral.  

 

Please review the guidelines for theses and dissertations, accessible from the Graduate School's website, for helpful information as you prepare for submission.  For more detail, please access the Thesis and Dissertation Guidebook.  

Graduate School Closed on 12/19/12 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The Graduate School will be closed from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19thStudents may drop off forms in the dropbox outside Caldwell 143.

Graduate Community Advisor (GCA) Positions Available

Are you interested in organizing programs and activities for graduate students residing on campus? If so, you might be interested in being a Graduate Community Advisor (GCA) for the next academic year, 2013-2014. You have an opportunity to serve Hasbrouck, Maplewood, or Hughes.  

 

Appointments are for the full academic year, starting August 1, 2013 - May 31, 2014.

January 2013 Degree Candidates 

The tenth annual December Recognition Event for January '13 Graduates will be held on Saturday, December 15th, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a reception from 11:15 a.m. - noon.

 
Please arrive at Barton Hall by 9:15 a.m. on 12/15, wearing your cap and gown and carrying your hood.  You will check-in and assemble for the procession. PhD candidates will be hooded on the stage.

Workshops:
CSCU Multilevel Modeling Workshop

Start the spring semester early by attending the CSCU Multilevel Modeling workshop right before classes begin on Thursday, January 17th and Friday, January 18th 2013.

  

Multilevel models (also referred to as mixed models or hierarchical models) are used when observations are not independent.     

   

The workshop is intended for participants who have the equivalent of two semesters of statistics and some previous experience with ANOVA and linear regression.

Wilderness Skills Instructor Certification


This spring, Primitive Pursuits will offer two Wilderness Skills Instructor Certification programs. This course will cover a wide variety of primitive technology skills, naturalist skills and teaching methods.

Academic English for Non-Native Speakers Course

The School of Continuing Education is offering an Academic English for Non-Native Speakers program for students who are interested in continuing their work in English writing and/or speaking/presentation skills.  These courses will be offered from January 21-May 4, 2013.  There will be no direct cost to the student; costs will be covered centrally. Free Movie at Bailey Hall:

The Santa Clause


Staff, faculty, and students remaining on campus and their families are invited to attend a showing of The Santa Clause starring Tim Allen of Home Improvement fame on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 7:00PM. Presented as a gift to the Cornell Community from Bailey Hall, the film is free, and provides an opportunity for kids of all ages and adults to view this holiday riff on a big screen.

 

The doors of Bailey Hall will open at 6:00PM and there will be a reception with light refreshments in the lower lobby. The film will start promptly at 7:00PM. And runs for 1 hour: 47 minutes.

Ithaca Concert Band Annual Holiday Concert (Free)

 

The Ithaca Concert Band presents their annual Holiday Concert with guests, The Seneca Singers and I.C. Voices.  

 

The concert will be on Friday, December 14th at 7:30 pm at Ithaca College, Ford Hall, in the Whalen Center for Music.
Music includes "The Polar Express" by Silvestri and Ballard, "Christmas Concerto" by Corelli, Hallelujah Chorus by Handel, and more.  

 

The concert is free, but donations are accepted.
Ithaca and the surrounding areas have a rich history of outstanding community bands. Many band members are from the Cornell community.

2013 Sigma Xi Student Research Competitions    


Student Research Showcase (March 18-23, 2013)

Participate in Sigma Xi's first virtual Student Research Showcase in March 2013.  This online competition will connect student presenters and judges from around the world with presentations that include a written abstract, brief video and technical slide presentation.   A sample presentation site, with information on how to create a Showcase presentation, can be found at:  http://sigmaxishowcase.tumblr.com/

  

Sigma Xi Student Research Conference (Nov. 8 and 9, 2013) 

Join students as they present research posters, attend career development sessions, tour research facilities, network and hear lectures by award-winning scientists.  Awards will be presented for outstanding presentations.

The 2013 Student Conference will be hosted near the Sigma Xi Center in the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program

Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security 


The U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security Program will hold its second annual Summer Institute on Global Food Security Tuesday, May 28- Saturday, June 8, 2013 on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.  

 

This two-week learning program is for graduate students who are interested in developing a holistic understanding of the conceptual challenges around global food security with a focus on cross-disciplinary problem solving of real-world development challenges. Applications will be available at the program website in early January 2013.

Borlaug Graduate Research Grant

 

The U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security graduate research grant application cycle will open in early January 2013.   

The grant supports exceptional graduate students who are interested in developing a component of their graduate research in a developing country setting and in collaboration with a mentor from an International Agricultural Research Center (IARC) or a qualifying National Agricultural Research System (NARS) unit.

Einaudi's New Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program  

 

The Einaudi Center will award two post-doctoral fellowships for the 2013-14 academic year in the field of foreign policy, security studies, and diplomatic history. Outstanding junior scholars from any part of the world whose work demonstrates excellence in the social sciences or humanities and addresses questions of lasting importance are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2013.

Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE professional) is designed for recent graduates, Master's and PhD students, and alumni of the RISE program who are matched with a well-known German company, where they gain insight into the professional applications of science and engineering and develop practical skills.
