Future Faculty Webinar:

CIRTLCast Research Ethics

STEM education is more than just teaching science. It means engaging undergraduate students to develop their sense of professional identity, while collaborating with other scholars on research teams. On the front lines of this discussion are graduate teaching assistants.

University of Alabama at Birmingham has challenged TAs to design new lesson plans on research ethics. Mitzy Erdmann, a graduate student in Chemistry from UAB, will share her experience in teaching and assessing more than 600 undergraduate STEM students as they learn about the potential pitfalls in data integrity, including inaccurate data, mislabeled samples, and possible fraud.

Presented by:

  • Jeff Engler, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School
  • Nancy Abney, Instructor & Program Manager, University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School Professional Development Program
  • Mitzy Erdmann, Chemistry Education Graduate Assistant, Department of Chemistry, University of Alabama at Birmingham

The CIRTLCast series features presentations throughout the academic year on topics related to STEM education. Future topics include service learning in STEM and issues confronting minority graduate students.

The seminar is meant to be informal, so please bring questions you have about conducting field research in organizations.

  2. We match you up with a teacher in a local school to develop your idea into three to five lessons.
  3. You turn in a lesson plan/syllabus before you begin teaching, and in return GRASSHOPR will provide a $250 dollar stipend to cover costs of supplies and mileage to your school site.
