Planting Season Is Here!

The first rains have come, the soil is softer, and hopefully many, many more storms are on the way. It's time to plant! We've been holding back during the last few years because of the drought. With luck this will be the season that we get everything in the ground. But we need your help!

Friends of the Month: Trail Map Team

A watershed-size thank you to the team members who donated their talents to updating our fabulous trail map: GIS guru Karen Paulsell, cartographer extraordinaire Louis Jaffe, and graphic designer bar none Cheryl Koehler. Pick up your copy at Sausal Creek Watershed trail map boxes, the Dimond Library, the Dimond Recreation Center, or the Joaquin Miller Park Ranger Station. I Am Sausal Creek / Soy el Arroyo Sausal

Fresh off the presses, this bilingual English and Spanish book by Melissa Reyes introduces readers to the history of Oakland told through the voice of Sausal Creek. The story is accompanied by 12 stunning full color illustrations and includes several pages of supplemental history about the watershed. Melissa is grateful to the many members of the Friends of Sausal Creek community who helped bring the book into the world!

Help Us Solve This Mystery

Do you recognize this place or any of the people in this old photo from the Oakland History Room's collection? All the librarians posit is "kids playing in Sausal Creek." Email Kimra at coordinator@sausalcreek.org if you can help solve this mystery!

The Biggest Plant Sale Ever

On October 25 we had a record-breaking 300 visitors who purchased $8,500 in plants and added another $600 in donations, making this our most successful plant sale fundraiser ever. The day was magnificent because of so many generous spirits: artist Vi Strain for allowing use of her yellow lupine illustration; Graphic Designer Cheryl Koehler for her flyer artistry; Ratcliffe Architects for donating printing of our large signs (plus our new shoe cleaning procedures poster); La Farine-Dimond, Peet's-Montclair, Trader Joe's-Rockridge, and Noah's Bagels-Montclair for fueling our indefatigable volunteer team; and crowd pleasers Alameda County Master Gardeners, The Spider Chick, Native Bird Connections, May Chen and Kathleen Harris (spreading the love for pollinators), the facepainting McAfee girls, and Harlan James Bluegrass Band. Thank you!
Kudos

Congratulations and a huge thank you to two recent Eagle Scout candidates for building much needed additions to our native plant nursery: Gates Zeng completed the final three benches to bring our shade house to full growing capacity, and Lloyd Ashton delivered two specially designed benches for dormant bulbs to abide near the greenhouse.
