Greetings!
Have you ever felt your heart swell in gratitude? Have you ever wanted to spread your arms wide and shout, "thank you, thank you, thank you!" If you answered yes then you know what we mean when we say gratitude is a natural heart expander. Meister Eckhart, a 13th century German theologian once said "if the only prayer you said in your life was "thank you," that would suffice.
It is easy to take things for granted. How much time during the day do you actually focus on gratitude, compared to the time you spend thinking about the problems in your life? Sometimes we act as if gratitude and appreciation are our good china and our fancy table cloth that we bring out on really special occasions. We invite you to make this thanksgiving season an opportunity to start a new practice of giving thanks on a daily basis.
Take a minute each morning to get comfortable and relaxed. Get out your preferred means of documentation, whether it's a pen and paper, or journal or your smart device. Write the date at the top and list three things you are grateful for. Then take 30 seconds to close your eyes and really focus on and feel appreciation for each one. You will need to add three new items or people on your list every day in order to build your appreciative muscle.
Note also that it is best to write your answers down, as doing so reinforces them. A written list also provides a nice reference for tracking your progress over time and it becomes a resource of positive inspiration you can review in a low moment to help you feel better.
