Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful eNewsletter
Greetings!

WOW!  It has been a whirlwind 2 months for KALB!

Thank you to everyone that participated in or assisted with the many events that took place.

I wish to express my deepest appreciation for all the prayers, concern, and love that was shown to me during the unexpected loss of my husband, Ted, in September.  I was told by many that Ted's big grin was missed, especially at the Fiddlers Convention.

Please enjoy this newsletter and pass it on to someone who may not receive it!

Community Garden Project Showing Progress!

Ribbon Cutting December 7th

KALB, Spirit of Athens, City of Athens, and the Limestone County Commission are so pleased with the progress being made on this project at the Farmer's Market!

Volunteers have built a shed for needed garden tools, and a gazebo to enhance the property.

Our local Lowe's Heroes donated their time and the supplies to add landscaping and a walkway to the gazebo area.

Doug Doerr, Boy Scout Troop 240, and his troop are working on building raised beds in the front section of the market.  This is Doug's Eagle Scout project and is one of the largest projects taken on by a local scout.  Mike Doerr, Doug's father, is on the project team.

Bricks donated by Lynn Persell Home Builders and Bassco Cast Stone will be used for one oblong raised bed and stone block from Lowe's will be used to build two keyhole beds.  Unused culverts donated by the City of Athens will be turned on end at different heights to be filled with plants and flowers.

The raised beds will need to be filled with soil.  Anyone with good, clean soil they might be willing to donate should contact Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful at 256-233-8728.

The committee is hoping that art students will come forward who would like to add murals to the culverts to add  interest.

There is still a need for a group or individuals who would be willing to oversee the community garden project into the future.

Vegetables and fruits will be grown at the garden and donated to Limestone County Churches Involved to be distributed to those in need.

Contact the KALB office at 256-233-8728 or send an email if you would like more information on this project.

Tips for Disposing of Latex Paint
Paint Cans

Small Amounts:   Place paint can with lid off in a safe location away from children and pets.  Let paint dry COMPLETELY.  Once paint is dry, the can may be recycled.

Larger Amounts:   Line a cardboard box with a garbage bag and place in a safe location.  Pour paint into the box and add a drying agent, such as kitty litter, shredded paper, or a commercial paint drying product.  When the paint is completely dry, tie up the garbage bag and place in with regular trash.  Recycle the box and the paint can.

Oil-based Paint, Kilz, etc.:  This type of paint can only be disposed of properly at a Household Hazardous Waste Collection.  See story below.

 Household Hazardous Waste Collections

KALB held a Household Hazardous Waste Collection (HHWC) on May 31, 2008 with the expenses covered by the City of Athens and Limestone County.  There has not been a HHWC here since that date.

HHWC events are very expensive because it is necessary to have a company certified to handle this type of waste on location.  That includes a chemist who can determine the contents of unclear or unmarked containers  The cost of the 2008 event was just under $24,000.

The largest part of the expense was for the disposal of latex paint which, as noted in the above article, can be properly disposed of by the consumer.  For this reason, when there is another HHWC, latex paint will not be accepted.  This will allow more funds to cover chemicals that cannot be properly disposed of in any other manner

If you would like to have another Household Hazardous Waste Collection provided to the residents of Athens and Limestone County, please talk to your elected officials and let them know.
