Ruby McCartney was recently named Plant Manager of our recycling center, and we couldn't be more pleased to have her in that position.
Ruby has been with KALB since 2010, and has held the position of Acting Plant Manager since November, 2012. She comes to the position with a wide range of experience managing her own businesses, organizing events, overseeing budgets, and many valuable talents we continue to discover!
If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Ruby, stop by the Recycling Center and say hello!

Farmer's Market Renovation Team
A group of individuals interested in making our Farmer's Market even more wonderful have begun the process.
A $20,000 grant was awarded to KALB for the purpose of adding green space, landscaping, and a community garden to the market property.
Our biggest challenge will be developing our raised bed gardens. We are learning a great deal about how to make them as organic and possible, and will continue to learn as we go through this process. We will grow a variety of produce to be given to a local organization for distribution to needy families and seniors.
If you are savvy about organic gardens or have a desire to be part of this work in progress, please let us know.
You will soon see sidewalks and curbing work being done, and green space improvements. Never fear! This work will not disrupt activities at the Farmer's Market, so make your plans to visit the market weekly, gather with friends, and shop for wonderful produce, baked goods, and other delights!
The improved landscaping, sidewalks and gardens will just add to the charm of our Farmer's Market, and we can't wait!

Environmental Superhero Training
Over 100 area Cub Scouts recently attended a week long summer camp held at Point Mallard. Members of the KALB staff were on hand to teach the scouts how to become Environmental Superheroes!
Their first lesson centered around recycling. We taught our superheroes that each time they recycle, they are doing their part to save the world!
So what do we really save? Here are just a few examples:
Aluminum Cans
Last year, Americans recycled 61 billion aluminum cans, saving the energy equivalent of 17 million barrels of crude oil. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable into new aluminum cans, saving raw materials.
Plastic Bottles
Producing new plastic from recycled material uses only two-thirds of the energy required to manufacture it from raw materials, meaning we can save a whole lot of energy and crude oil by recycling plastic. Plastics recycled at our center are sold to Custom Polymers PET right here in Athens; however, our materials only keep them busy 2 hours per month. They must purchase materials from across the country and beyond to support demand for their product (and provide local jobs). We can do so much better locally! Remember: Our recycling center will continue to take #1-#7 plastic containers after the city's curbside services change. Don't sort it out, just bring it all to us!
Batteries
Recycling both rechargeable and single-use batteries saves water, energy and natural resources. But the No. 1 reason to avoid tossing batteries in the trash is to prevent potentially toxic metals from contaminating local ecosystems. Just bring them to the Recycling Center during business hours!
Glass
Like aluminum, glass can be infinitely recycled back into new containers. An estimated 80 percent of reclaimed glass is processed through bottle-to-bottle recycling, and it can take as little as 30 days for a glass bottle to go from the recycling bin to a supermarket shelf. Recycled glass is substituted for up to 70 percent of raw materials in manufacturing. REMEMBER: Our recycling center will continue to take glass bottles and jars, even after the city's curbside service changes. Just bring them to our drop-off center!

Outdoor Events?
Make Them Clean and Green
With warm weather arriving, there will be lots more outdoor events going on. They may be church or community events, a picnic at the park, or a pool party in your own back yard.
KALB has a Clean and Green program to help encourage litter control and recycling at outdoor events. This program includes helpful hints for personal events as well as assistance with larger outdoor community events.
Plan Ahead
The most important thing to do is plan ahead. Think about the products you will be using. Can you choose something more earth-friendly such as replacing Styrofoam plates and cups with something that can be recycled or reused?
Have a container for recycling next to your trash container(s) and let your guests know that recycling is available. Keep a watchful eye on your trash and recycling containers so they don't overflow. This will help prevent litter and encourage your guests to use the correct containers. If the trash can is overflowing, trash may end up in your recycling bin.
Leave No Trace
If your event takes place at a public park, at the river, or another public location, be sure to take time to remove all trash and other evidence that you've been there. Leave no trace of your visit behind.
Contact us for additional information on Clean and Green events, or for help with an outdoor community event.
