Let's Journey Together!

A word from Pastor Ginny
Shortly after November's horrific terrorist attacks in Paris, a mosque in Philadelphia received a phone message stating, "I hope you people are happy about what you did in Paris. I'd like to state for the record that Allah is a piece of pork shit." Then, in the early morning hours of December 7, five days after the San Bernardino massacre by two self-radicalized supporters of ISIS, the mosque manager arrived to unlock the front doors for early morning prayer. As he was about to enter, he noticed the severed head of a pig lying on the sidewalk. Pork, as you probably know, is forbidden in Islam and this is rightly understood as an act of desecration. Philadelphia police are investigating both incidents.

How ironic that these events took place in Philadelphia, The City of Brotherly Love, which was founded by William Penn. As a Quaker who experienced imprisonment and persecution in Anglican England, Penn established his colony as haven for religious freedom. His ideas gave rise to the values ensconced in the U.S. Constitution which guarantee legal protections for the free exercise of religion.

Anti-Muslim rhetoric has reached a fever pitch in this country.  All of this rhetoric stands in sharp contrast to those values. Although there are real threats that the extremists flying the banner of Islam pose, we should remember that the overwhelming majority of mass shootings in the U.S. have been carried by non-Muslims. Americans have many misconceptions about Muslims in the U.S. and we need to be better educated. We also need to befriend them; 64 percent of Americans today say they don't know a Muslim. The key to overcoming suspicion and fear of the other is to build relationships. Will you reach out a hand to take a stand against hate?

Extended Families begin in January
Would you like to be part of a family without the drama of of one?
A new program is being started that will assign participants to a multi-generational group to get together monthly to eat a meal, see a movie, volunteer, go on a field trip, or whatever the members wish to do. Make a commitment for a year and have fun! Show your interest by signing up outside Cook Hall. We will organize the groups for balance and let you know which "family" you're with. Questions? Contact Linda or Pete Betsch or Pastor Ginny.

Compassionate Conversations on Race
As we become more aware of the reality of racism and its damaging (and sometimes deadly) impacts on people of color, this Facebook group has been created so that concerned members of First Church, South Church, and the community at large can carry on a conversation and explore opportunities to make a difference here in Granby.

YOUTH NEWS THIS WEEK
Sunday SchoolHouse This morning Troy Chicoine is helping us construct our own miniature barns out of the natural random 'stuff' in our own back yards - moss, leaves, sticks, tree bark, pine cone bits and grass. We want it to remind us just how simple, crude and unadorned a barn can be. Good to remember at a time when ornaments and decorations are everywhere!

Faith Ed meets again in 2016... Stay tuned!
