Some of you asked why I did it.
Someone called this morning to ask why I took part in a non-violent action in Hartford yesterday that resulted in my arrest.

This person said, "I admire you for standing up for your convictions, but do you really think that blocking traffic and inconveniencing commuters was an effective way to call attention to #BlackLivesMatter?

That was exactly the point. I regret the inconvenience to commuters, but the reality is that it is more than inconvenient to be black in our country. It is downright dangerous.

I did it because I believe in the dignity and worth of every human being.
I did it because I deeply love democracy, but I also believe that we will not have true democracy until white folks actively work to dismantle the structural injustice that is part of the air we breathe.
I did it because I stand in the pulpit week after week and urge you to give God's love hands and feet.
I did it because I couldn't do that with integrity and not put my own body on the line.
I did it because I couldn't not do it.
