First Edition
Let's Journey Together!
One of my favorite bits of Bible trivia is that the phrase "Fear not" appears 365 times, one for each day of the year. I have no idea if that claim is accurate, but even if the phrase only appeared 100 times, it would still be significant. Fear is a universal emotion with tremendous, crippling power. And when fear is based on reality--not just "false evidence appearing real"--we need more than will-power to cope with it and carry on.

It seems to me that fear is more pervasive in 2014 than it was in 2001 in the months following the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and Washington, DC. Back then, many clung to a confidence in US economic and military might. Neither is not looking rock-solid these days! Or maybe you put your confidence in science--the amazing engine of invention and ingenuity. But these days our confidence seems to have shrunk as our fears have grown. We fear that we won't be able to afford to retire, or that our health care won't be enough to cover our needs. We worry that the cruelty of ISIS will touch our lives, not just peoples in remote parts of the world. Americans even worry about contracting Ebola, thought the probability is miniscule! If there's something to worry about, our minds pick it up and blow it out of proportion.

Blogger Danessa Foo writes, "Fear is placing your faith in 'what-ifs' instead of "God is. It's allowing your imagination to wander down a long dark alley of possibilities and get mugged every couple of steps." The central claim of Christmas is that God was born and lived among us as a human being. God most certainly is!

Christmas Creche Display - December 7

THIS SUNDAY, bring your favorite Christmas creche to Cook Hall before the service so that everyone can enjoy it. Fancy or not, matters not! After worship you can enjoy snacks while browsing the Alternative Gift Fair and others' favorite nativity scenes.

Shopping at FCC - Alternative Gift Fair

The Alternative Gift Fair opens for business this Sunday morning following worship in Cook Hall. As in years past, a wide assortment of gifts for giving are available... crafts, toys, apparel and jewelry made by artisans in developing countries through 10,000 Villages, animals to "purchase" and give on someone's behalf from Heifer Project, and the Angel Tree, to benefit Hartford's Maternal and Infant Program.

"Kids in Community" Project

KIC will be doing a special Christmas project in Granby this year.

All kids in Kindergarten through 8th grade can help out. We will make beautiful paper snowflakes, attaching a special Christmas message and delivering them to all 60 rooms in the Meadow Brook Nursing Home after worship on Sunday December 21st. The kids will work on this project at Coffee Hour on Sunday December 7 and then again on Sunday December 14 with a pizza party. You'll need a permission slip to participate in the delivery on Dec. 21. Click here to print:  KIC permission slip.

Conversation with Tara on Stewardship Results ....

[For those of you who old enough to remember Bob Newhart's phone monologues, imagine the doggie with the tin-can phone as Bob the Stewardship Guy talking to our Church Dog, Ms. Tara, about the results so far.]

Hi Tara! Yes that is right, we have achieved 92% of our goal, but still have to hear from 11% of our members.

Oh, you have a solution? Hmmm - you are going to go to each of them and beg for a treat plus their pledge card?

And if they don't come forth, you're going to lick them? Umm, not everyone appreciates a doggie kiss.

OK - you will be careful to only harass the laggards?

Yes, but many of those laggards are nice people and may be among your friends who give you treats already. They just are a little disorganized or they don't understand the Church's need to know their plans for giving in 2015. We are not asking them to pledge a specific amount, but to make explicit the amount that is comfortable for them. Our pressing need is to have their pledge because we must propose and approve a budget for 2015.

Umm - maybe instead of barking to remind them, you could just nuzzle them in a friendly sort of way to remind them.

I think that is a great idea if all your friends read this and then remind their friends to turn in their pledge cards.

Thanks for your call, Tara. I will let you know what happens!
