The Old Capitol Market - Burmister Building

Old Capitol MarketColes Bashford arrived in Prescott in 1864 and was the first President of the territorial legislature. In 1874 Coles, and his brother Levi, and son William formed a partnership with Robert Burmeister. The Bashford-Burmister Company became one of the largest mercantile stores in northern Arizona, selling everything from mining supplies to fresh vegetables. The original structure burned in the fire of 1900. This brick building, built after the fire, was enlarged and remodeled in an Art Deco style in 1929. In the 1940's, J.C. Penney replaced the Bashford-Burmister Company at this location. It was again renovated for use as an atrium mall in 1994, and in 2014 the north half of the building was turned into the Old Capital Market, housing many fine retailers. On the top floor, the beautifully renovated space was turned into the Plaza View Ballroom, with stunning views of the courthouse square and the only location on Prescott's historic downtown square to serve groups up to 299 people.
