Modified Summer Work Week Schedule
Reminder for Professional Staff and Librarians

On May 21st, the Administration sent out its notice about the Modified Summer Work Week. AFT Local 1904 would like to remind all Professional Staff and Librarians that the general operating hours for the university starting the week of June 2nd through the week of August 11th are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. As such, should you take a vacation or sick day during these ten weeks you are to record 8.75 hours on your time sheet for each vacation or sick day taken.

Our agreement can be found by clicking here. Page two of the agreement list the dates covered by this agreement.

In the event that an office needs to remain open five days a week during this time period, schedules will be worked out between the unit members and their supervisors for a four day work week - either Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday, or a regular five day work week. See section two of the agreement for more details.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jennifer Higgins ([email protected]) or Susan Hagen ([email protected]).

It's a time of endings, transitions and beginnings. Spring semester is over and the hectic nature of our regular fall and spring semesters has ended. Grades are in. Students and colleagues are gone and Commencement and our Convocations are the transitions. They signify the end of the academic year and our students are transitioning to a new phase in their lives. Some to the workforce. Others to graduate school. Others to start a family. And still others that are looking around to see where they best fit in the world. It's an exciting time for them. We are transitioning to a summer schedule. Longer days but Fridays off. And hopefully easier parking with at least better weather when walking from your car to work or around campus.

Then, there are the beginnings. New students in our summer sessions. New faculty moving to the area and preparing to take their place in front of the new freshman starting in September. It will be the class of 2018. Freshman born around 1996. I am feeling older by the second.

It is also spring transitioning into summer. Many in our community are gone but just as many remain. Our Professional Staff and Librarians are there where they always are. Many of our faculty are teaching summer courses. Others are traveling for research and for pleasure. Others are relaxing and recharging.

Your union officers are here and the Local's office is open regular hours. We are getting ready for both local and state-wide negotiations as well as doing the typical ongoing work of the Union. I hope to see you at both the next Board of Trustees meeting where faculty promotions will become official. Note that the meeting date is changed from the notice promoted faculty received from President Cole and the meeting is now on June 11th at 10:00AM. And there is a General Union Meeting on June 25th starting at noon, a little earlier than typical with more of a lunch spread than our usually afternoon snack.

I wish you well in wherever your summer takes you. If you are here, I hope to see you around campus. If you are gone or going, I wish you safe travels.

In solidarity,
