10 Tips Towards A Successful Reappointment
For Faculty, Librarians, and Professional Staff
Many of us are working on or have submitted our reappointment paperwork whether we are untenured Faculty and Librarians, or Professional Staff. In addition to needing to paying attention to your reappointment time table and submitting your paperwork on time, AFT Local 1904 has 10 Tips that will help you with the reappointment process.
1. Before submitting your paperwork, review the recommendations from your previous reappointment. Those recommendations are not "suggestions"; they are "directives" that define the goals for you to meet. Make sure you have addressed them in this year's packet.
2. Do not assume the reader knows and understands what you do. Whether you are writing about your research or your job function, be sure to provide an explanation that any reader could understand. Remember, your packet is not just reviewed by your department or immediate supervisor. It is reviewed by individuals that more than likely are not familiar with, or do not have a depth of knowledge about, your field.
3. Proofread your submission and have a colleague proof read it as well. Your submissions should be error free. You don't get a second chance at a first impression.
4. Be proactive. If you haven't received a response within the required time frame, follow up with your chair, Dean, immediate supervisor, or Provost as appropriate. Send respectful reminders of the deadlines regarding your paperwork.

Book Drive for Irvington Public Schools
The AFT Local 1904's Outreach Committee will be collecting donations of children's books for the Irvington Public Schools until October 9th.
Books are needed for every grade level, particularly non-fiction. Graphic novels for older students are also needed. New books are prefered, but used books without tears or markings will be gladly accepted and put to good use.
If you need help figuring out which books to donate, the American Library Association's Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best in children's books each year:
Drop off books at the Technical Services Department in the Library or bring them to the October 9th General Union Meeting. Technical Services is just behind the Reference Desk to the left.
Don't have time to get to the Library? No problem! Contact the Local's office at ext. 4453 or via email at union@mail.montclair.edu to arrange a day and time for pick up.

Upcoming General Election
Tuesday, November 5th
The 2013 campaign season is in full swing. In November, we will elect the governor and the entire legislature. As state employees, the outcome of the elections will directly affect the outcome at the bargaining table when we negotiate our successor statewide agreement in 2015.
Our choice is clear for governor. Senator Barbara Buono stood with public employees and voted against the legislation that took away our bargaining rights for health care. And she lost her leadership position in the senate defending our rights. She stands with working families and progressive causes against the Christie "all for the rich, nothing for the poor" program.
We ask that you come out and support progressive candidates, including Senator Buono, in this election. The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is organizing labor-to-labor walks and phone banking throughout the state. Labor-to-labor walks are conducted weekly on Saturday mornings from now until the November 5th election. The time period for a labor walk is to arrive at the dispatch point at 8:30 AM and return to that point at 12:00 PM. If you can spare the time, please click here to determine which location for the walks or phone banking that is closest to your home.
Please consider volunteering at least one Saturday morning completing a labor-to-labor walk and one phone banking session in support of progressive candidates. If you decide to participate in either a labor walk or phone banking, or have any questions about the upcoming election, please let Bill Sullivan know by contacting him via email at bill.sullivan@aftlocal1904.org.

It's Time To Raise The Wage
Vote "YES" on Ballot Question #2
On Tuesday, November 5th vote "YES" on Ballot Question #2 to increase New Jersey's minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.25.
Full-time workers making the current minimum wage of $7.25 per hour earn $14,500 annually - about $3,600 below the poverty line for a family of three. Over 400,000 New Jerseyans, including 230,000 children, would be positively impacted by the measure, providing an additional $1,000 to $2,000 each year.
AFT Local 1904 urges its members to exercise their voice on Election Day, Tuesday November 5th, to support the minimum wage ballot question, and provide working families in New Jersey a long-overdue raise. Find out more at www.raisethewagenj.org.
Interested in a lawn sign in support of Ballot Question #2? Contact the Local's office at ext. 4453 to arrange for pick up. Quatities are limited.

 | Richard Wolfson, President AFT Local 1904 |
President's Corner
Campus is beautiful this time of year and all of us are getting to see more of it as the hunt for a parking space takes longer and walks to our cars are extended. The project that ripped up our central core is completed and the Business School and Center for Environmental and Life Sciences Buildings are rising. Students new and old are energetic and it is contagious. But many of us only see a small part of what is happening on campus. We go to our classes, hold office hours go to meetings and work in our offices. When was the last time you watched any of our sports teams? Have you been to a women's soccer or basketball game lately? Or ever? A football game on a fresh fall afternoon? A student concert or production? If not, you are missing the best part of our community. But there is a golden opportunity this coming Saturday. Homecoming. October 12th.
Homecoming is an awesome day and is my favorite after commencement. It starts with a pancake breakfast and ends with a football game. In between there are open houses, Alumni gatherings, tailgating, a carnival and more. Our students, their families, alumni and community members are there, as well as friends you haven't seen in years. There are activities for everyone. AFT Local 1904 will be there on Alumni Green from 11-3:00. We'll have AFT schwag and spring water. Come by with your families, as we'd love to meet them. And you can meet ours too.
Sometimes we forget the greater community, which is Montclair State. Homecoming is a good time to renew that excitement and connect to the best of what we are. An awesome campus with the best faculty, professional staff and librarians anywhere.
