CNJSCL Endorses Buono for Governor
Unanimous Endorsement
At the February 15, 2013 Council of NJ State College Locals' (Council) delegate meeting, representing the Council's eleven locals, the Council unanimously voted to endorse Barbara Buono, the Democratic candidate for Governor. Her voting record on labor issues during her decade as a State Senator is 92%. This includes advocacy of a higher minimum wage, pegged to inflation, guaranteed sick days and protection of public employee health and pension benefits.

Tim Haresign, Council President commented, "Senator Buono has demonstrated time and time again that she is a true friend to the working people of this state. We need a leader of this state who will take action to support the middle class. Under the Christie administration New Jersey has the worst job creation numbers of any state in the country and has suffered big cuts to funding in education. Senator Buono is dedicating to reversing these trends and fighting for a brighter future for the workers and students of the New Jersey."
Lecturer/Clinical Specialists Positions

On February 18, 2013, AFT Local 1904 and the administration of Montclair State University signed an agreement stipulating the terms and conditions of work of instructional and clinical specialists. This agreement was based on the creation of these two academic positions by the MSU Board of Trustees.

According to the MSU Board of Trustees, these are "full-time, non-tenure track positions without academic rank." Instructional and clinical specialists may not participate in any personnel matters and academic departments may invite them to participate in "department meetings and curricular and other educational matters." The primary responsibly of an instructional specialist is to teach courses and to provide advisement to students. Clinical specialists are primarily responsible for the coordination and overseeing of students engaged in internships, practica, studios, and clinical and field assignments.

A few highlights of the agreement include:

  1. The minimum salary for employees hired into Instructional/clinical specialists tiles with a Master's Degree will be $46,000 and those hired with a Doctoral or other appropriate terminal degree will be $56,000 for the fiscal year.
  2. The maximum teaching load of an instructional or clinical specialist shall be 12 courses during a fiscal year with no more than four courses in any one particular term. Summer session and winter session will each be considered as one term.
  3. The provisions of the Statewide contract related to benefits and sick leave shall apply as appropriate to employees holding the Instructional/clinical tiles.

When I was growing up, this time of year was stressful because it was "tax season," and my father was an accountant. For many of us, tax time is always a little stressful, what with gathering documentation to prepare a return, or organizing slips of paper so the accountant can.

As you may already know, the University made an error this year on our W2s that affects anyone who pays New Jersey State income tax. And that's all of us-including out-of-state residents. The discrepancy is not a large one, but will likely result in your owing a little more in state taxes. Human Resources has said they will provide details soon, and that you should soon have your amended W2.

We have notified the Administration that many of our members will have increased filing expenses because of their error, and HR has requested that we compile that data for them. Of course, they made no promises, but if this administrative error has caused you added expense for, say, extra accountant fees, send the information directly to me, and I will be sure to let the administration know. It's also a good time to check your pay stub to be sure you're on the correct Range and Step. This is particularly important for those who have received a performance-based promotion, a faculty promotion, or a range change, since there have been a few errors and it's better to uncover them early.

Changing gears and looking forward, the New Jersey Gubernatorial race is starting to heat up. Both the College Council and AFTNJ have endorsed Barbara Buono, as she has been a stalwart defender of worker's rights, women's issues, and affordable healthcare. She also presents a stark contrast to the rhetoric and actions of Governor Christie. We encourage you to pay attention as this plays out over the next few months and leading up to the election. The quality of our next round of contract negotiations depends on the outcome of the election. The Local is committed to working in your best interests for a fair contract in both the financial and procedural spheres. We will keep you informed as best we can so you can make an informed choice come November.

For those of you who will be leaving New Jersey during Spring Break, I wish you a safe trip. For those of us who will be left behind working, I hope that it will be less stressful than usual and afford some time to catch up. I'm especially hoping that I'll catch up.

In solidarity,

Rich
