Aloha ,

Volunteers recently spent a few hours on a Saturday morning weeding and cleaning the Malaekahana Bike & Pedestrian Path. The volunteer service was part of a community "Day of Service" for members and friends of the Laie Hawaii Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dedicated in March 2011 as an Envision Laie community partnership project, the path is heavily used by students attending Kahuku High & Intermediate School, and also by residents for exercise and recreation.

The Laie Community Association (LCA) oversees maintenance of the community bike and walking path. Various individuals, families and groups have cleaned sections of the popular path that connects Laie and Kahuku.

Pane Meatoga, Jr., president of the LCA said, "Over the last couple of years weeds have sprung up in hard to reach places along the fence between the path and Gunstock Ranch. There were hundreds of volunteers out weeding and cleaning during the service project, and they made a huge difference - a big mahalo to everyone for their kokua!"

Meatoga continued, "We also thank those volunteers who faithfully clean the path on a regular basis all throughout the year."

Streetlights Being Replaced

Hawaii Reserves, Inc. (HRI) is in the process of replacing 15 streetlights throughout Laie. HRI owns and maintains the streetlights on steel poles in the community, while those on wooden poles are owned and maintained by the City & County of Honolulu.

Jeffrey Tyau, HRI's vice president of operations said, "These new streetlights are designed to last a long time. The poles are aluminum, have concrete bases and will use energy efficient LED lights. We are also happy to have a local contractor, Iosepa Electric, do the installation work."

Tyau added, "We try to ensure that our streetlights are in good working order, so we encourage residents to call us at 293-9201 to report any steel streetlights that are out or malfunctioning in Laie. Issues regarding wooden pole streetlights, which are maintained by the City, should be reported to 768-5300."

Mahalo,
