Contractors working on building projects at BYU-Hawaii are also finding ways to "better" Laie and surrounding communities while they're constructing new facilities at the university.

Most recently, local construction company Jayar Construction re-graded and resurfaced the parking area for Laie Elementary School. Laie Trucking supplied materials for the project.

Resurfaced Laie Elementary parking area

"The smooth, re-surfaced lot replaced the once uneven and sometimes muddy lot," said Matthew Ho, principal of Laie Elementary School. "Laie Elementary faculty, parents and visitors are appreciative of the generous donations and safety contributions the school received."

Aaron Yahiku, project manager with Jayar Construction remarked, "We were more than happy to help Laie Elementary School with this project, it's a pleasure to work with BYU-Hawaii on improving the community."

"Leaders at the university and our sister institutions wondered if there was a way to bring some additional benefit to the community via our building projects," said David Lewis, BYU-H Vice President of Construction and Facilities. "Our contractors really 'stepped up to the plate' and we're grateful for their contributions to our local community."

As most of you know, BYU-Hawaii has been an integral part of Laie and Ko'olauloa since 1955. The parking lot contractor service project is one of many geared toward bettering community facilities in our area.

Other projects include improvements to the Kahuku High & Intermediate School (KHIS) Stadium Press Box; power-washing the bleacher seating at the KHIS football field; and a number of improvements and repairs to the KHIS track area including drainage, track and ambulance access ramps, inside track curbing, fencing, irrigation and field surface.

We'll be sharing more details of these projects and the folks behind them in coming weeks. But if you want to see some of their good work right now, go drive by and take a look.
