Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are pleased to share with you our 2013-14 Strategic Plan. This plan builds on our successes and lessons learned over the last three years.

In 2010, we launched an ambitious plan to significantly increase the number of children succeeding in school and the number of adults employed in Dane County. That plan focused on strengthening the quality and daily execution of our initiatives, and added new programs and services to empower more individuals in need.

In the last 12 months, we've learned that we have much more work to do. Through our partnership with the Wisconsin Council on Children & Families' Race to Equity Project, we've learned that the poverty rate among African American children in Dane County has increased from 48% in 2006 to 75% in 2011.

We also learned that Dane County has reached a record rate of unemployment among African Americans, with 25% unemployed in Dane County compared to 18% nationally. In addition, we know that nearly 90% of all African American and Latino students, and 50% of all students attending the Madison Metropolitan School District live in poverty. Poverty rates for students of color are nearly as high in other local school districts, and poverty among white students in MMSD is increasing as well.

Unfortunately, equally high rates of school failure and underachievement among students of color will lead to even higher rates of unemployment, poverty and social and economic decline among children and families in the future. These issues will only contribute to an unnecessary and avoidable decline in the quality of life and economic vitality of our capital city and region if we don't act quickly, and with the most effective and impactful solutions, to reverse these challenges and trends while we still can.

Please download and review our plan to learn how we are going to educate, employ and empower children and families, and partner with others to make Greater Madison becomes the best place in the Midwest for EVERYONE to live, learn and work by 2020.

To accomplish these goals, we need your financial support and engagement. We will not succeed without it. Our general program costs are listed below, and our plan shows how we can produce a significant return on your investment by employing parents and ensuring children are inspired and adequately prepared to succeed now and in the future.

South Madison residents and Promise Zone partners invite you to a viewing of Soul Food Junkies. Filmmaker Byron Hurt addresses the upsides and downsides of soul food, a quintessential American cuisine. Soul Food Junkies explores the history and social significance of soul food to black cultural identity and its effect on African American health, good and bad. Soul food will also be used as the lens to investigate the dark side of the food industry and the growing food justice movement that has been born in its wake. More than 300 people attended the last Promise Zone event earlier this month.

To Accomplish Our Mission, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

I Am An Urban Leaguer

As a nonprofit 501c3 organization, we rely on the generous contributions of money, time, talent and in-kind support from organizations and individuals like you who help us forward our mission of education, employment and empowerment across the Greater Madison area. We hope you will consider making an investment in our vision, our mission and our work. Please consider making a contribution so we can continue our efforts uninterrupted:

  • Sponsor one Urban League Scholars Academy student for one year for $2,500 or an entire class of 20 students for one year for $50,000. At 16-hours per week (including 8 class periods of additional learning in language arts and mathematics), the program costs just $13 per day. Also, consider pooling your resources together with your family, friends or co-workers to make a group investment.
  • Sponsor one student to participate in our 32-hour ACT College Readiness Academy  for $500, or an entire four-week cohort of 20 students for $10,000. Our ACT Prep course focuses on instruction rather test-taking, is 6 to 8 hours longer than your typical high cost ACT Prep program, and is taught with smaller class sizes (20 vs 30-40 students). Our program also includes the completion of a full-length pre-test and post-test, and a 2-hour college planning and financial aid workshop.
  • Sponsor one adult to complete a five-week workforce training program for $650, or an entire cohort of 20 trainees for $12,500.
  • Get involved with us, either as a volunteer in our education or workforce initiatives or with the South Madison Promise Zone initiative. Specific investement opportunities in the Promise Zone will be expressed soon. For more information, please contact Kristen Sorensen, Volunteer Coordinator, at ksorensen@ulgm.org or 608-729-1226.
  • Download our event and program sponsorship menu by clicking here. We are continuing to seek sponsors for the Workplace Diversity Summit. You can download our 2013 Sponsorship Menu by clicking here.
If you have questions or would like more information on investment and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Mark Richardson, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at mrichardson@ulgm.org or 608-729-1265.
