Health & Agriculture: Porter Connecting to the Community

Porter Medical, a member of Healthcare Without Harm, is implementing changes in its food policy to achieve incremental steps for a more sustainable food system. The trend is on the health-agriculture connection at healthcare facilities. The purchasing power of health care systems is enormous, the decisions health-care institutions make about food can have a substantial impact on public and environmental health.

Laura Brace has been purchasing foods from many local producers including Maple Meadow fresh eggs to our local dairy Monument Farms. For four years she has been tracking local food purchases and is now using a more inclusive definition of sustainability as part of a Farm to Plate healthcare working group. With a national push to reduce the consumption of meat raised with high levels of antibiotics, she has switched to a chicken that meets the high standards of HCWH with suitable pricing for patient meals. Other decisions toward sustainability include reducing bottled beverages replacing with refillable containers with daily offerings of fruit and vegetable infused waters. A compost program was instituted to reduce the amount of food in the waste stream to meet Act 148: Universal Recycling Law
