SUMMER and YOUTH... On two separate weekends at the end of this month, 14/15 year olds and 12/13 year olds are invited to join their peers from around the state for an affordable, overnight camp focusing on youth farm safety. Hosted by UVM Extension and offered at UVM this is a great opportunity to engage kids in farm related activities. As your thoughts are turning from school to summertime, please share this opportunity with your students, friends and family. The camps are open to all -- whether you have never even been near livestock and tools, or you are already running machinery on your home farm. More info on this and other youth programs

New, Young Farmers
If you have walked & shopped our local farmers markets you know there are new faces. Over the years you have become familiar with our established growers, but now we are seeing more start-up farm and food based businesses.
They are producing a great mixture of
products including wonderful wild leek pesto from Mountain Warrior and a spectacular spicy greens mixture from Footprint Farm. Yore Fare is another small emerging farm working to bring small scale ag to your kitchen. Local meat is part of the mix from some of these farms and you can purchase freshly slaughtered meat- as good as it gets- at the markets. See them all at the Wednesday and/or Saturday Bristol, VT Farmer's Market. Each producers is selling in many different markets- CSA, online, direct to stores and at the open markets around the county. Stop by and hear their stories and be like me, become an instant fan of our young growers and share in their enthusiasm! Needless to say, you will find new faces at all our local marktes. |
F2S Student Heroes: Eye Eye, Potato Planting Day
Students at Shoreham Elementary had a great spring in the garden prepping and planting under intense May sun and early June rain. The kids worked hard to get the jobs done in narrow windows of time. Making it fun with watering chores and tool cleanup was just part of the job. Cheers of success to all the kids on the crew who began the summer garden. Food Service Director, Dot, loved seeing the planting of crops that will be fed to the kids come fall.
ACORN intern Linnea Burnham will visit this and other gardens adding a helping hand to stay ahead of weeds. Each school has its own methods of maintenance but if you are interested in helping your school garden, let us know so we can help you make connections. Email Linnea for details!
