On Friday, March 1st, after weeks of testimony, the House Agriculture Committee voted to pass H.112, a bill that would require the labeling of foods produced with genetic engineering, with a vote of 8-3.

Greetings!

Great things are brewing all because of you! Your interest and enthusiasm in food, energy, and business are keys to affecting good, positive change. Addison County is not quite Toronto (with its food policy) but there is significant public engagement in food issues. If you sit on a school board, are a food buyer or play role in administration, continue to leverage your position to think beyond short term solutions to advance change over the long haul.

There are many influences and directions in our local food system:
  • ACORN sponsored its first workshop geared to farmers: On Farm Kitchen Processing.
  •  The Coop brought together an engaged crowd of sixty at a GMO's presentation Feb 28th informing to affect change.
  • Farm to Preschool Salons just keep getting better as members connect around the theme of early childhood nutrition. (If you want to join the pre-school salons, please contact Lea).
  • Farmer Buyer Matchmaker-see link in the left column or call Annie for details, 922-7060
  • The Stone Soup Farm to School Summit, April 4th at Mt Abe, exists and thrives because of excellent public participation for a greater good: food, nutrition and wellness.

All of these foster peer to peer connections and small group sharing. Upcoming events are listed below and in the side column.
We are hosting the first annual Farm to School Inspiration Awards. Please nominate your Addison County Food Heroes by March 15th and join us at the 4th Annual Stone Soup on April 4th to hear their stories.

ACORN is a Vermont non-profit currently working on specific projects to broaden Addison County's impact in the arena of food, agriculture, capitalization of small businesses and renewable energy resources.  We build connections; the links are meant to show the array of Vermont-based resources. Kindly share ideas that can support our effort. JOIN ACORN

Farm to School
ACORN is busy in its farm to school work! Who knew local food was about meetings with principals, superintendents, business office managers, food service directors and school boards?
We appreciate the time and attention these incredibly busy folks have given to ACORN's work in fostering more connections to local farmers and professional development for food service workers. Keep up with your school board
s' attention to local food, nutrition and wellness issues and let your voice be heard! Through these channels more healthy local food can be served in our schools.

Above, ACORN Board member and educator Emily Hoyler shares her wealth of food knowledge with the students at Beeman Elementary School.
