Remember, first day is on the first!
Because Labor Day is so late this year (Sept. 7), school will start before Labor Day on September 1. Students will still get Labor Day off.

Long-Term Facilities Task Force survey, Open House coming soon
Over the last few years, Lake Washington School District's enrollment has been growing by the equivalent of an elementary school each year. There is little space left in current school buildings, some of which need replacing due to their age and building conditions. That was the challenge facing the Long-Term Facilities Task Force as it began its work last December. They have now developed a set of recommendations that may affect your child's school in the future.

You can review the recommendations and provide feedback beginning September 1 through an online open house. A survey on that site will be open September 1 through October 11. There will also be meetings in each of the district's learning communities in late September: information will be in the next issue of this newsletter. Save the date now for a Task Force Town Hall on Wednesday, October 7, at Rose Hill Middle School at 6 p.m.

LWSD aims to reduce, manage concussions in high school athletes
Efforts aimed at reducing, better managing concussions in football, girls' soccer and other sports
This fall, LWSD is implementing a comprehensive program aimed at reducing and managing concussions among high school athletes in the district. This program has several parts: "Heads Up" concussion training for all football coaches; neurocognitive testing that can help determine if a student-athlete is concussed; and replacing all football helmets that have lower protection ratings. Lake Washington students more likely to meet ACT college readiness standards
Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students who take the ACT, a standardized test used in college admissions, are more likely to meet college readiness standards than other students in Washington state or nationwide. Far more LWSD students score high enough on each of the four ACT tests (English, math, reading and science) to meet the college readiness benchmark that ACT has set. Read more.

LWSD partners with Peachjar
If you are an LWSD family, you should have received an email from the Peachjar system on August 24. As previously mentioned in Connections, the district has partnered with Peachjar to distribute district-approved eflyers from nonprofit organizations as well as from schools and school-related organizations. The Peachjar system replaces the "Community Bulletin Board" section of the district and school websites. The welcome email that you received should have had your email address and a temporary password. The only time that you will need to access the system with your username and password is to set your preferences within the system. You can also unsubscribe from the emails at any time.

Riding the bus?
LWSD's transportation department mailed out postcards to all families whose student(s) will ride the school bus to/from school on Tuesday. Watch for them in your mailbox shortly. Questions? Contact the transportation department at 425-936-1120 or visit the district website, where bus routes are posted.

Walking or Bicycling?
Walking and bicycling are healthy ways for students to get to school. New Suggested Walk Route Maps for elementary schools are being completed and posted on the district website. A subcommittee of the district's Safety Advisory Committee, along with traffic and pedestrian safety experts, worked with a consultant to develop GIS maps of updated walk routes. The same group also developed a new district policy around school walk routes and students riding bicycles to school, consistent with state guidance.
