Adobe Reader Upgraded to Cloud

If you haven't seen this already, Adobe is transforming its popular Adobe Reader pdf reader into Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

The DC stands for Document Cloud, which means you can work with pdf files on mobile computers and devices.

This allows users to work with pdf files on iOS tablets and SmartPhones. It also provides some limited functionality on Windows Phone.

The basic reader is free, while you can purchase subscriptions for other options beyond the basic program.

With the free version, you can open, view, sign, print, annotate, search and verify pdf files. You can also sign up for a free Adobe Document Cloud services account to store up to 5GB of data, get instant access to recent files across desktop, web and mobile devides, and sync Fill & Sign autofill fields across all of your devices.

For $89.99 a year, a subscription to Adobe PDF Pack enables you to convert documents and images to pdf files, use your mobile device camera to take a picture of a document or form and convert it to pdf, and turn pdf files into editable Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint files.

This installs much like the old Adobe Reader line. And yes, you still need to be careful not to install ancillary software like Google Chrome, the Google Toolbar and McAfee, all of which are still annoyingly offered by Adobe.

You can read more about Acrobat Reader DC here https://helpx.adobe.com/reader/faq.html. To download, go to https://get2.adobe.com/reader/ for desktop computers, visit the iTunes App Store or Android's Google Play store for mobile devices, or update through Windows Phone updates.

Tech Support Scams Continue

I wrote about another variation of the age-old fake tech support scam last month but feel compelled to repeat my warning about hackers posing as official tech support for companies like Microsoft and Dell due to the number of people I see falling for this.

With hackers reviving the tech support telephone scam to call people randomly and warn them about problems on their computers, I have been receiving calls every week from distraught customers who allowed the scammers onto their machines.

The scam runs virtually the same way each time. The caller claims the customer's computer has been hacked or infected and will soon crash if they don't let the scammer access the computer remotely to fix it.

Typically, once the customer allows this, the scammer takes the customer into the Event Viewer in Windows to show all of the errors there that proves the computer is infected. Those errors are always there -- they are not infections.

Eventually, the conversation turns to the fee to remove the infections, and when customers balk, the conversation turns ugly with the caller threatening grave danger to the customer's computer and becoming belligerent if the customer doesn't utilize the removal service for $199 or $249 or whatever the fee is that day.

To reiterate, if you get a phone call from Microsoft or Dell tech support, just hang up. They don't call people. Pass it on.

BizTech Talk -- Why End-User Security?

I talk a lot about end-user IT security and its importance in securing your network and your most valuable asset -- your data.

You may be wondering, though, what I mean by "end-user security" and how our FlexIT End-User Security Program differs from traditional anti-virus software?

End-User Security
End-User IT Security refers to securing the most vulnerable link in your network's protection -- your end-users.

Increasingly, hackers are bypassing traditional anti-virus and firewalls by attacking the end-user instead through phishing scams, tech support scams, ransomware, etc.

Would your users know what to do if a ransom note suddenly appeared on their computer demanding that ransoms in the hundreds to thousands of dollars be paid before they could access their files again?

Would your end-users know not to open an unexpected file attachment, even if it appears to be from someone they know?

Would they know not to allow a random caller from "Microsoft tech support" or "Dell tech support" to access their computer remotely, or not to provide their computer's user name and password to an unfamiliar voice on the telephone?

If you subscribed to the FlexIT End-User IT Security Program, they would.

The Problem with Anti-Virus
Traditional anti-virus uses definitions and signature databases to determine if a file is a virus or not. The anti-virus software developer adds virus file names to these databases and when the file name is detected on a computer, the anti-virus software blocks it.

The problem with this approach is that virus writers and hackers have become very adept at quickly changing their file names so that the anti-virus companies simply can't keep their databases current.

Hackers also take great pains to ensure their viruses aren't detected by anti-virus software before releasing them.

So, if you've ever wondered how your computer became infected when it has anti-virus software, that's why. There is always some lag time between a virus's release and its detection by anti-virus software. During that lag time, you will become infected if the virus hits before it's in the databases.

Why End-User Security is Better
The FlexIT End-User IT Security Program educates your end-users about the latest tricks and scams employed by hackers so they know how to avoid being duped and what to do if they are.

It also protects ALL of the end-users devices, not just their office computers. Laptops get the same protection as the office computer no matter what network the employee logs into on the road. Mobile devices are controlled to avoid a common source of data leakage.

And all of it is managed and monitored by FlexITechs on a daily basis -- unlike traditional anti-virus, where we often don't learn that a computer has been infected for weeks or months until another problem requires our attention.

In addition, the FlexIT End-User Security Program utilizes a Host Intrusion Protection System to catch not only definitions-based infections, but also catch any file that behaves in a virus-like fashion so that even infected files not in the database will be blocked.

Of course, it's not 100% full-proof. Enterprising hackers will find a way around any defense mechanism.

But we are confident enough in this new security program that we include FREE Virus Removals for any infection we can remove remotely -- which is most of them.
