Java Zero-Day Exploit ...

I'm sure by now you've all heard about the Java Zero-Day exploit that even caught the attention of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and caused Apple to disable Java through its update system.

Many of you may be wondering what you should do to protect yourself from this threat that could allow a hacker to take complete control of your computer.

While Java has released a patch for the vulnerability in its latest release, Java 7 Update 11, most security researchers don't believe the threat to be neutralized and are recommending disabling Java in the browser.

To do this, follow these steps:

Internet Explorer:

  1. Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools / Manage Add-ons
  2. Scroll down the list to find add-ons for Java and click on them to highlight them in blue
  3. Click the Disable button

Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Open Firefox and select "Tools"
  2. Select Add-Ons
  3. Find Java entries and click Disable

Google Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome and type Chrome://Plugins into the browser's address bar (where you type in web addresses)
  2. Find any Java entries and click the Disable button

 Apple Safari:

  1. Open Safari and click "Safari" in the main menu bar
  2. Click Preferences
  3. Select the Security tab
  4. Uncheck the box next to Enable Java

If you find after disabling Java that certain web sites don't display or function properly, you can re-enable Java in your browser long enough to use those web sites then disable it when you're finished. The steps to enable are the same as disabling with the exception of clicking the Enable button instead of Disable.

BizTech -- Does Your Software Stymie Growth?

Believe it or not, the software we use to help run our businesses could be one of the main stumbling blocks in our company's financial growth.

If you're bouncing between Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Quickbooks and a host of other applications designed to do just one thing, it can be very difficult to make sense of what's happening in your business.

If that describes you, it's time to look for an integrated solution to running your company.

Software developers have written specialized software for almost every industry imaginable, from POS systems for retailers to complete Accounting / Inventory / Customer Relationship / Sales / Service systems designed for specific industries that manages your entire business from just one application.

Some will be on-premise only and might require a server. Others might be cloud-based, which would require only an Internet connection to be accessed from anywhere. Some can be expensive. Some are surprisingly inexpensive. Almost all are developed by people with more in-depth knowledge of your industry than Microsoft or Quickbooks.

To find software designed specifically to run businesses in your industry, do a web search for your industry followed by phrases like "management software" or "management application".

For help assessing your company's needs and specific technology solutions for them, contact FlexITechs owner Eric Magill at 302-537-4198.
We thank you for your past business and hope we can continue to fulfill your technology needs in the future. If you have any questions about current technology issues, feel free to contact us at 537-4198.
Sincerely,
Eric Magill
