DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Prominent businessman Jesse Hoyt gave our city the funds to build the Hoyt Public Library, which opened in 1890. He purposefully limited the amount that he gave so that the citizens would have to contribute to the support of the library if they really wanted it to flourish. One hundred and twenty-three years later, the library still stands as a wonderful example of community pride and place of knowledge, and the Public Libraries of Saginaw today provides library services in several branches in our service area. Below is an article informing you about the millage renewal on November 5. Please exercise your right to vote!

Library Millage Renewal: November 5
|
Encouraging reading, collecting and sharing the history of our community, providing reliable resources for students of all ages, helping entrepreneurs with new businesses, being a community gathering place, offering computers and help for job and information seekers, enriching and entertaining patrons with quality programs - these are some of the major initiatives of the Public Libraries of Saginaw. The important work that your library does gives our community the tools to improve lives.
On Tuesday November 5th, the Public Libraries of Saginaw has a millage renewal proposal on the ballot. This renewal is for 1.2983 mills for ten years and does not change the current tax rate. Please exercise your right to vote on November 5th.

Michigan Reads!
|
Since its inception, the Children's staff of the Public Libraries of Saginaw has promoted Michigan's One State, One Children's Book Program. The Michigan Reads! program is in the ninth year and it focuses on the importance of reading and sharing books with children, especially toddlers through early elementary. The library's role is vital in providing access to the quality books, programs and services that lay the foundation for reading and school success.
Through book displays and special programs, we began our celebration of this years' Michigan Reads! selection; Woolbur by Leslie Helakoski, at our Wickes and Zauel branches in October. Celebrations will continue during the month of November at the following Saginaw library locations:
Tuesday, November 5 ~ 10:00 a.m. ~ Hoyt Library
Friday, November 8 ~ 10:30 a.m. ~ Butman-Fish Library
Tuesday, November 12 ~ 4:30 p.m. ~ Claytor Library
Woolbur is a wonderful story about a sheep who hangs out with wild dogs, cards his own wool to avoid the shearing barn, and even dyes his wool blue. He is different, creative and a true leader. Woolbur does not follow the flock, but instead, everyone is following him by copying his wild hairstyles and imitating how he struts his own independence. Children will love the illustrations and the laughter that come from this tale.
The Michigan Reads! program is sponsored by Target with additional support from the Library of Michigan Foundation and Sleeping Bear Press.

Meet the Local History
and Genealogy Department
|
The Local History and Genealogy Collection is located on the 2nd floor of the Hoyt Library. The library contains the third largest genealogy collection in the state of Michigan second only to Lansing and Detroit. Genealogy staff guides patrons in their search for their family history. We also archive and preserve the history of Saginaw. In the past months, we have had visitors and inquires from Ireland, Germany and Malaysia. Our department consists of one full-time librarian, Stacy McNally, two part-time employees; Leo LeFevre and Chris Applin and one part-time page; Amanda Ruffini. The four of us have a genuine love of Saginaw History.
