DIRECTOR'S REPORT

Known for its maps, fantastic photography, and instantly recognizable yellow margined cover, National Geographic Magazine has been a staple in American homes and libraries for over a century. Now, instead of storing multiple years of perfectly stackable issues, you can access the National Geographic Magazine Archive 1888-1994 from your own home. How cool is that? Every article, map, photo - right at your fingertips through our website. A new database, funded by dollars from the Saginaw Public Libraries Foundation, is now available to legal service area residents to use for research and general knowledge acquisition. Please check it out at www.saginawlibrary.org - it is an amazing resource that will prove invaluable to students and educators, as well as the general public.

Meet our Children's Staff

childrens

Some of the first people to inspire and equip children at an early age with lifelong learning and literacy skills are the children's staff at the Public Libraries of Saginaw. Through preschool storyhours, after school programs, puppet shows, classroom visits, family activities and more; these staff members along with the Children's and Teen Services Coordinator plan, implement and evaluate activities and services that allow children, their families and caregivers to experience the joy of reading, and the excitement of discovering knowledge.

The children's staff at our five locations is committed to creating a library environment that's inviting, relaxing, and fun while meeting the educational, cultural and recreational needs of children through books and other resources.

The next time you're in one of our library's, stop in the children's department and say hello to our staff. They are excited about the responsibility they have in serving children.

Saginaw Celebrated Cinco de Mayo...with

Parade and Activities for the Entire Family

cincodemayoThe celebration of Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of a much smaller Mexican militia army (4,500) over the much larger and better armed French Army (6,500) in the city of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. The Mexican victory at Puebla helped produce national unity and pride and is commemorated by "Cinco de Mayo." Today, in Puebla, the United States and locales around the world, "Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican Heritage and pride; a day for the entire community to enjoy Mexican culture, cuisine and music", states Union Civica President, Angela Blanco.

In Saginaw, you will experience one of Michigan's largest Cinco de Mayo parades, which is organized by the Union Civica. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. Due to construction, the parade route will be changed and will start on Water St., travel Genesee Ave. to Washington Ave. (past Hoyt Park) and will turn onto Ezra Rust Dr. to Ojibway Island. Angela Blanco shared that this year's parade theme is "Viva La Voz" or "Celebrate the Voice" which celebrates the impact of the growing Hispanic importance to the political process. "The theme and message stresses the importance of Hispanics and especially the youth, to get involved and make their voices heard."

The Cinco de Mayo parade is followed up with a celebration featuring "family friendly" events and activities on Ojibway Island, which include large inflatables for children, an array of food vendors to sample a taste of Mexican cuisine, folklorico dancers and musical entertainment. The entire community is invited to join the celebration. Events and activities on Ojibway Island run from 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m. There is a $3.00 Island fee per person; children five and under are free.
