DIRECTOR'S REPORT

I just read a survey conducted by someone at Orbitz, the travel site, that said 68% of Americans will go on a trip sometime this month before Thanksgiving. That's a lot of people traveling - are you one of them? How are you planning your trip? Travel books, ideas of things to do with kids while traveling, books-on-cd, DVD's for the vehicle, a wide variety of magazines, and downloadable e-books are all must-haves for a successful trip. The library is a friendly, convenient place where you can get all of these items in a single stop, for one low price - FREE! Yeah, we have all that at the library. Be smart - save money, save time, save resources - and enjoy your trip!

Steve Parkhurst presents

"Mrs. Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf

dalloway "Mrs. Dalloway" is a novel by Virginia Woolf that details a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, a fictional high-society woman in post-World War I England. It is one of Woolf's best-known novels.

Created from two short stories, "Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street" and the unfinished "The Prime Minister", the novel's story is of Clarissa's preparations for a party of which she is to be hostess. With the interior perspective of the novel, the story travels forward and back in time, and in and out of the characters' minds to construct an image of Clarissa's life and of the inter-war social structure.

Noted lecturer Steve Parkhurst takes participants on an interactive tour of this British classic on three consecutive Monday evenings.

Civil War Book Discussion featuring

"March" by Geraldine Brooks

marchWednesday, November 28

2:00 p.m.

Hoyt Library

To kick off this series the book "March" by Geraldine Brooks will be discussed. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel has animated the character of the absent father in Little Women, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With"pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs. A lushly written, wholly original tale steeped in the details of another time, March secures Geraldine Brooks's place as a renowned author of historical fiction.

Making Sense of the Civil War is a series of Discussions sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
