Governor Baker Declares September Massachusetts Apple Month
BOSTON - September 12, 2016 - Governor Charlie Baker today declared September as "Massachusetts Apple Month" to support Massachusetts apple growers, especially during the current drought conditions. The declaration was followed by a visit to Wojick Orchard in Blackstone by Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Matthew Beaton and Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) Commissioner John Lebeaux.
"Massachusetts Apple Month' is an opportunity to recognize the hard work local apple growers do to produce delicious and healthy fruit from Massachusetts," said Governor Charlie Baker. "I encourage everyone to support Massachusetts' farmers this month by purchasing locally grown apples and other produce."
"Despite a very challenging growing season, farmers have been working very hard to bring quality products to farm stands and farmers' markets, and they have succeeded in doing so," said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton. "Apple growers also help support our local and regional economies and participate in a wide variety of conservation efforts and renewable energy projects that advance the protection of the environment."
Massachusetts boasts more than 140 varieties of apples grown in the state, including local favorites such as McIntosh, Cortland, Macoun, Gala and Honeycrisp. According to the United States Apple Association, apples contain no fat, cholesterol or sodium and are excellent sources of fiber, natural plant-based anti-oxidants and the mineral boron - which promotes healthy bones.
"The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources encourages consumers to visit their local farmers' markets, farmstands and pick-your-own operations. There's plenty of healthy, high-quality, locally-grown product there that will taste delicious in meals and snacks," said MDAR Commissioner Lebeaux. "There's no denying our farmers have had a lot of challenges thrown their way this season; we can greatly help them by purchasing and enjoying their nutritious harvest."
With approximately 340 apple orchards in Massachusetts on over 4,000 acres of land, the Commonwealth yielded over 28 million pounds of apples worth $20 million in 2012.
Visit MDAR's farm finder to find information on Massachusetts apple orchards, pick-your-own apple farms, farmers' markets, and roadside produce stands.

It is that time of year again where kids are getting ready to go back to school. Unfortunately, it can be a difficult time for some parents because kids not only need school clothes, but they also need backpacks and school supplies. Financially, this can prove to be very difficult for some families. Catholic Charities has stepped in to fill that need and lessen that burden for families who need the help by holding an annual "Stuff the Bus" school supply drive.
The "Stuff the Bus" campaign was created as an avenue to collect school supplies for children in need; donations range from backpacks and lunch boxes to crayons, pencils and notebooks. Southbridge Savings Bank and SpencerBANK employees generously donated to the "Stuff the Bus" campaign which made a significant difference in the support Catholic Charities was able to provide to local children in need. "The beginning of the school year should be an exciting time," stated Bonnie Losavio, AVP-Human Resources at Southbridge Savings Bank, "Southbridge Savings Bank and SpencerBANK employees were pleased to partner together to help local school children start the year in a positive light."
If you want to help, there is still time. Donations can be dropped off directly to Catholic Charities at 79 Elm Street in Southbridge.

Country Bank Staff Participate in Habitat's Operation Playhouse
Pictured with Country Bank Work Crew: Mom and Army Veteran, Jessica Myshrall with her children Kaili and Kalani.
A group of 14 Country Bank employees recently joined forces with Habitat for Humanity Metro West/Greater Worcester in a team building exercise that ended with a local veteran family receiving a unique gift - a custom playhouse.
Habitat's Operation Playhouse is a program designed to allow groups to come together to create and complete a custom playhouse in one day. The opportunity to work together and collaborate on design and construction of the house is wrapped up with the reward of seeing it turned over to a local veteran and their children.
"Working with the Habitat staff was seamless, and the day couldn't have been more rewarding." stated Deb Gagnon, Corporate Relations Officer, Country Bank. "Completing the playhouse gave us all a sense of accomplishment, and when the family arrived to receive their gift, there wasn't a dry eye around."

North Brookfield Savings Bank Combats Hunger
with Annual Fall Harvest Food Drive
Annual Fall Harvest Food Drive from October 1 - 31 at NBSB Branches
North Brookfield Savings Bank (NBSB) is once again holding its Annual Fall Harvest Food Drive to help local families in need, with collections taking place from October 1-31 at all of the Bank's branches. The Bank and the local communities are dedicated to helping local residents struggling with hunger as they head into the fundraiser's ninth year.
NBSB's goal is to collect at least 3,500 items total, but its support to families in need doesn't stop there. For every item collected, the Bank will contribute $1, for a total of up to $3,500, to help fund the pantries' operations.
Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items, paper goods and toiletries at any NBSB branch during the drive.
The drop-off locations include:
* North Brookfield Branch: 9 Gilbert Street * East Brookfield: 100 West Main Street, Route 9 * West Brookfield Branch: 128 West Main Street, Route 9 * Ware Branch & Business Center: 40 Main Street, Route 9 * Belchertown Branch: 4 Daniel Shays Highway, Routes 9 & 202 * Palmer Branch: 1051 Thorndike Street * Three Rivers Branch: 2060 Main Street
Examples of nonperishable and non-food items that pantries can use are: paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, diapers and baby wipes; deodorant, soap, tooth brushes and toothpaste; dry and canned pasta and soups, canned meats, tuna and salmon, peanut butter, jelly, tea bags and ground coffee; canned vegetables and fruits, hot and cold cereals, rice, cake mixes, pancake mix, syrup, powdered milk and granulated sugar; canned juices, baby food, baby formula, granola and cereal bars.
"Hunger continues to be a serious concern among our local residents and neighbors. The NBSB Annual Fall Harvest Food Drive allows us to connect with our communities and the local food pantries to address this unfortunate issue that is close to home," said North Brookfield Savings Bank President & CEO Donna Boulanger. "We are enormously grateful for the continued generosity displayed by the citizens of our local communities. Time and time again they step up alongside us to help. We know this year will not be any different."
The Annual Fall Harvest Food Drive is just one of the many local outreach events held by North Brookfield Savings Bank to help address the needs of the communities it serves. From November 1 through December 10, NBSB will continue the tradition of collecting gifts for children of local struggling families through the NBSB Annual Holiday Toy Drive being held at all of the Bank's branches. The Bank also holds an annual in-branch fundraiser, "Our Community Is Where It's At," to benefit a chosen local charity. This past spring the fundraiser was focused on feeding low income campers who attended Camp Putnam through the "Feed a Camper at Camp Putnam" campaign.

and Resilience Strategist Rita Schiano
Knowing the secret behind firewalking can improve your life! Even if you never try it, knowing how it works can bring you better health and increased personal power. Why? Because firewalking demonstrates how your thoughts impact everything else in your life. Thoughts change brain chemistry, and that results in an alteration of body chemistry as well.
Firewalkers are instructed to pay close attention to their thoughts, since those very thoughts are the way in which we create our own realities. Positive thinkers literally live in a different chemical environment than negative thinkers. They impose less stress on their immune systems.

Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane That Transformed New England September 21
Opacum Land Trust brings author Stephen Long to Sturbridge to share his new book: Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane That Transformed New England on
September 21, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Dinner and Program will be presented at The Publick House Historic Inn, Sturbridge.
September 21st is the anniversary of the great 1938 hurricane that devastated our region, flooding the town of Southbridge and flattening many of our woodlands. Opacum Land Trust is proud to host Stephen Long, author, blogger and writer on the woodlands of New England.
From Stephens book: "In 1938, not a single living person in New England had ever experienced a hurricane. The previous one had been so long before that people in the Northeast believed that hurricanes only happened down south. Florida, Texas, maybe North Carolina. Not Massachusetts. Then, without warning, the most destructive weather event to ever hit the Northeast blasted its way through all the way to Quebec."
6:00pm Cocktails and Book Signing; 7:15pm Dinner
Proceeds to benefit Opacum Land Trust.

September 24, 7:00pm, Burgess Elementary School, Sturbridge
On September 24th at 7:00 PM, the Stars will be out at Burgess Elementary school for the Dancing with the Stars event to support Domestic Violence awareness. Another pair of stars will shine and will be vying for your votes to win our competition. Poise Style & Motion Studio instructor Heidi Schoenfeldt has been busy instructing Aaron Cote a Judo instructor at Hitchcock Academy in Brimfield.
After studying Martial arts including Karate, Aaron Cote earned black belts in 2 styles of Jujutsu and now Judo, Aaron is well aware of the importance of the placement of feet, torso and hands but he is finding so many of the dance moves flow in a totally different direction that he is used to moving. As they rehearse, he finds it interesting to point out Judo moves to Heidi. Dancing with the Stars is out of Aaron's comfort zone, but he finds that is the very reason it is so interesting and fun! Heidi will show Aaron a move and he will state he cannot do that but within a week, he has mastered the skill.
Heidi Schoenfeldt is originally from Grafton, Heidi's passion for dance began with ballet. She also has experience in tap, jazz, and modern dance. She has been a certified ballroom dance instructor at Poise Style & Motion for 8 years and received a top female teacher award at The Commonwealth Classic Ballroom Competition in 2015. She is also a professional set, lighting and costume designer, and teaches technical theater at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill.
Aaron and Heidi have thrown down the gauntlet and are looking forward to the competition!

2016 Massachusetts Outdoor Exposition
Sunday September 25th, 2016
9:00am-4:00PM Rain or Shine
At the Hamilton Rod & Gun Club in Sturbridge MA
Brief History: The Massachusetts Outdoor Expo, fondly referred to as The Big M.O.E., started out with a group of sportsmen and women who wanted to create an opportunity for kids of all ages to learn more about outdoor skills, wildlife and conservation. They approached the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club in Sturbridge to host the Mass. Outdoor Expo, due to its central location, facilities and the connections the group had to the club. An annual event was born!
A couple of years later, members of the Massachusetts Outdoor Expo group approached F.A.W.N.S., (Facts About Wildlife & Nature Society), a non-profit group founded in 1998 to promote the connection of people to the outdoors. FAWNS was interested in promoting educational experiences focusing on the outdoors. A "natural" connection between the Expo group and FAWNS was obvious.
Dozens of great activity stations for all ages!
