C-MASS GEOFEST Blazes Trails in Year Two!
Geofesters assemble for a kayak cache on the Quaboag River at White's Landing.
C-MASS Geofest, our area's only major geocaching event took place August 17-21 in and around Sturbridge. The Chamber is thrilled to report that attendance increased by 50% from last year's inaugural geofest as we welcomed 303 cachers to our areas trails, waterways and other fun venues. Events included an ice cream social, a barbecue feast, an afternoon of bowling and putt putt golf, a night of stargazing, and of course, geocaching on our cache-rich trails!
What's all the fuss about geocaching? Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity in which participants use a Global Position System (GPS) receiver and other navigational tools to hide and find "caches". There are literally hundreds of geocaches hidden in the Sturbridge area making it an ideal locale for this fun, outdoor event for the whole family.
The Chamber is grateful to everyone who helped us spread the word about the Geofest, and our local venues who welcomed geocachers including Jimmy D's Ice & Sandwich Shoppe, Teddy G's Pub & Grille, Bogey Lanes, B.T.'s Smokehouse, Joshua Hyde Library, Tantasqua Regional High School, White's Landing, Rapscallion Brewery at Hyland Orchard, and our main event host Hamilton Rod & Gun Club.
The Chamber also expresses thanks to Bob Datz of datzmedia who created the event's website, the Chamber's tourism committee, the Sturbridge Trails Committee, the Sturbridge Recreation Committee, all of our wonderful and enthusiastic volunteers, and the Sturbridge Tourist Association for making Geofest possible again this year. Check it out online at C-MASSGEOFEST.com and make your plans to join us next year!

Experience Firewalk
September 17, 6:30-8:00pm
Green Acres Grounds, 66 Palmer Road, Brimfield
With special guests World Record Motorcycle Holder Doug Danger and Resilience Strategist Rita Schiano
Knowing the secret behind firewalking can improve your life! Even if you never try it, knowing how it works can bring you better health and increased personal power. Why? Because firewalking demonstrates how your thoughts impact everything else in your life. Thoughts change brain chemistry, and that results in an alteration of body chemistry as well.
Firewalkers are instructed to pay close attention to their thoughts, since those very thoughts are the way in which we create our own realities. Positive thinkers literally live in a different chemical environment than negative thinkers. They impose less stress on their immune systems.

From Stephens book: "In 1938, not a single living person in New England had ever experienced a hurricane. The previous one had been so long before that people in the Northeast believed that hurricanes only happened down south. Florida, Texas, maybe North Carolina. Not Massachusetts. Then, without warning, the most destructive weather event to ever hit the Northeast blasted its way through all the way to Quebec."

Save the Date for Dancing with the Stars September 24, 7:00pm, Burgess Elementary School, Sturbridge
On September 24th at 7 PM, the Stars will be out at Burgess Elementary school for the Dancing with the Stars event to support Domestic Violence awareness. Another pair of stars will shine and will be vying for your votes to win our competition. Poise Style & Motion Studio instructor Heidi Schoensefdt has been busy instructing Aaron Cote a Judo instructor at Hitchcock Academy in Brimfield.
After studying Martial arts including Karate, Aaron Cote earned black belts in 2 styles of Jujutsu and now Judo, Aaron is well aware of the importance of the placement of feet, torso and hands but he is finding so many of the dance moves flow in a totally different direction that he is used to moving. As they rehearse, he finds it interesting to point out Judo moves to Heidi. Dancing with the Stars is out of Aaron's comfort zone, but he finds that is the very reason it is so interesting and fun! Heidi will show Aaron a move and he will state he cannot do that but within a week, he has her mastering the skill.
Heidi Schoenfeldt is originally from Grafton, Heidi's passion for dance began with ballet. She also has experience in tap, jazz, and modern dance. She has been a certified ballroom dance instructor at Poise Style & Motion for 8 years and received a top female teacher award at The Commonwealth Classic Ballroom Competition in 2015. She is also a professional set, lighting and costume designer, and teaches technical theatre at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill.

Village Toastmasters Hosts Humorous Speech Contest September 8
Village Toastmasters of Sturbridge will host a speech contest on Thursday, September 8 at 7:00 pm.
Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition.
"As a Toastmaster, a speech contest sparks your competitive spirit and your creativity in a way that the routine Toastmasters meeting can't," said longtime Toastmaster and humorist John Kinde. "When you have the chance to compete, I highly recommend you embrace the opportunity."
On September 8, members of Village Toastmasters will compete in a Humorous speech contest and a speech Evaluation contest. Contestants in the Humorous speech contest will present five- to seven-minute comical tales or stories. Other Village Toastmasters members will serve as judges, scoring the humorous speeches based on content and delivery.
Immediately following the Humorous contest, Village Toastmasters members will compete in a speech Evaluation contest, where contestants look to deliver the best possible two- to three-minute assessment of a test speech. Judges will score each evaluation on their analytical quality, organization and recommendations.
Winners from the Village Toastmasters contests will continue competing through the Toastmasters' area, division and district levels.
Visitors and guests are always welcome at Village Toastmasters contests.

We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!
The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?
We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.
We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail [email protected] if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
