Motorcycle daredevil to ramp up business motivation

WHAT: Community Business Associates speaker Douglas "Doug Danger" Senecal

WHERE: Southbridge Savings Bank Community Room, Charlton Road, Sturbridge, MA

WHEN: 7:15 a.m., August 26, 2016

One
year after attempting and successfully completing a historic and world record motorcycle jump, Douglas "Doug Danger" Senecal imparts a "never give up" message that has carried him through cancer and revs him up to take on new challenges.

The motorcycle daredevil and speaker will tell his story at the 7:15 a.m. meeting of Community Business Associates on August 26th in the Southbridge Savings Bank Community Room, Charlton Road, Sturbridge, MA.

Already holding a world record for jumping 42 cars on a dirt bike, the Wales resident jumped 22 cars at the Buffalo Chip motorcycle festival in Sturgis, South Dakota on August 6, 2016 but this time, at age 53, he used a much heavier machine: the reconstructed 1972 Harley-Davidson ridden by his friend and boyhood idol, Evil Knievel, who failed in his attempt at this record-breaking jump when the bike was brand new.

Senecal's soft-spoken message for business people is simple: Know what you want, think big, dream big, act big, and keep going for it. "The definition of success to me is when preparation meets opportunity," Senecal likes to say.

Motivated speakers like Senecal are regular features of meetings for CBA, the business networking and referrals program of the Central Mass South Chamber of Commerce. Other guest speakers present business topics and helpful information for business and professional members and guests. CBA provides networking opportunities and community news updates as well. Visitors are welcome at no charge.

Community Business Associates welcomes business and professional visitors to attend as guests and begin to make fruitful business contacts along with hearing presenters and speakers. Guests may attend at no charge. The meetings run from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. CBA generally meets on the second and fourth Fridays each month.

Community Business Associates is a networking/referrals program of the Chamber of Central Mass South.

New Director of Mental Health Looks to Bridge Service Gap Across State Lines
Katie Adams

Katie Adams, a Brooklyn, Conn. native, is the new Director of Mental Health for Harrington HealthCare System.

She spent the last six years in clinical social work, but said as Harrington became more known throughout the community, her interest in the healthcare system peaked.

After learning more about available programs and the dual diagnosis unit being built in Webster, Katie was sold.

"Typically in the healthcare field, behavioral health is pretty low on the totem pole," she said. "But right out of the gate, it was clear that's not the case here."

Harrington already has one of the most expansive behavioral health programs in Massachusetts. Adult mental health, child and family psychiatry and counseling, recovery services, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization program, and an expansive patient access program are just some of the many services the healthcare system offers across more than 18 zip codes reaching across all of southern Worcester County. Harrington has offices in Webster, Dudley, Southbridge, and East Brookfield.

Katie would like to see an expansion of school-based services, and has already met with a number of superintendents in the area. She is also looking at the structure of the current outpatient program with hopes of focusing on a team-based care approach.

Living nearby in Connecticut, Katie's biggest vision is to bridge the gap between state lines.

"The Webster campus is eight minutes from the elementary school in Thompson (Connecticut) and people don't even know there are services and programs available," she said.

The northeast corner of Connecticut remains a market in considerable need, Adams points out, as there are very few options for people in that area for behavioral health services. She feels confident it is a region Harrington can help by providing those residents better access to care closer to where they live and work.

Katie lives in Brooklyn with her husband and five children. She received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University and her master's degree in social work from Rhode Island College.

Save the Date for Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane That Transformed New England

Thirty-Eight Opacum Land Trust brings author Stephen Long to Sturbridge to share his new book:  Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane That Transformed New England on
September 21, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Dinner and Program will be presented at The Publick House Historic Inn, Sturbridge.

September 21st is the anniversary of the great 1938 hurricane that devastated our region, flooding the town of Southbridge and flattening many of our woodlands.  Opacum Land Trust is proud to host Stephen Long, author, blogger and writer on the woodlands of New England.

From Stephens book:
"In 1938, not a single living person in New England had ever experienced a hurricane. The previous one had been so long before that people in the Northeast believed that hurricanes only happened down south. Florida, Texas, maybe North Carolina. Not Massachusetts. Then, without warning, the most destructive weather event to ever hit the Northeast blasted its way through all the way to Quebec."

Artists of The Last Green Valley Fundraiser a Success
TLGV Fundraiser
Sherry Abbate-Witkowski (center) presents a $450 donation to TLGV Ranger Marcy Dawley (right) at Taylor Brooke Winery, represented by owner Linda Auger (left). Photo courtesy of Taylor Brooke Winery.

Sherry Abbate-Witkowksi is an artist and a proud member of The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV). As someone who loves where she lives, she had a vision for an art show featuring local talent that would be staged at the perfect venue, Taylor Brooke Winery. Taylor Brooke, celebrating its 12th anniversary in 2016, is also a strong champion for the region and a long-standing TLGV business partner.
"Keep your heart brave & your imagination wild" was the driving force as Sherry gathered artists and organized the event details. With sixteen local artists showing off forty pieces of art during the collaborative art show, Sherry's vision came to life. A portion of the artists' entry fees were earmarked for donations to The Last Green Valley's conservation efforts and one generous artist donated a portion of her sales to TLGV, too.
"We are grateful for Sherry's creativity and enthusiasm in pulling together such a wonderful event and fundraiser for TLGV," commented TLGV Executive Director Lois Bruinooge. "Taylor Brooke Winery's 12th anniversary celebration provided the perfect backdrop for the artists, and we are also grateful for owners Linda and Richard Auger's continued support."

Hot Stuff Coming Up!
Stageloft Repertory Theater Presents
Stageloft
Wrong Window

The playwright duo of Van Zandt and Milmore pay tribute to "Master of Suspense"
Alfred Hitchcock with this comedy whodunit.

Off-and-on New York couple Marnie and Jeff enter an even more complicated phase of their relationship when they think they spy their cross-courtyard neighbor doing away with his wife. After they draw their torn curtain, the lady vanishes - and suspicion places murder beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The bumbling witnesses sneak into their neighbor's apartment - 39 steps away - and the fun begins. Among multiple instances of door-slamming, body-snatching and a frantic flashlight chase scene, two questions remain: Who killed Lila Larswald? And if she's not dead ... then who is?
The crazy farce plays out on a shadow-box set that allows the audience to be present in one apartment, while viewing the action in its mirror-image neighboring unit across the way.

Cooking with Rico: Italian Summer
Thursday, August 18, 2016  6:30pm at Avellino
Avellino

For this Cooking with Rico event, Chef Rico will be showing you how food is prepared in the summer months in Italy. Italian cooking varies tremendously from season to season, so much that were you to visit the country in January and then again in July you might think you had gone to two different places. In the summer months lighter dishes prevail, cool antipasti, simple pasta dishes with quickly cooked sauces, simple vegetables, quickly cooked meats-especially fried meats, which are lightly prepared, and grilled meats, which can be cooked outside-and creamy spoon desserts. So come along and see how Chef Rico interprets summer cooking "Italian style."

As always, these events sell out quickly so make your reservation early. This event is $55 per person with wine pairings, or $42 without. Tax and gratuity are not included.
Make your reservations now by calling Avellino at 508-347-2321.

Free Workshop on the LEAN Program
August 25, 9:00am to 11:00am
The McCurdy Group, 212 Main Street, Sturbridge

Bob Barnes and The McCurdy Group will present a two-hour interactive overview session designed to create awareness about Lean, to share some hands-on experiences, and leave you with some tools you can apply in your own work or personal environments.

Lean Is:
  • Removing waste from given activities in business operations
  • What is waste, waste is a non-value added activity
  • Value adding means whatever we offer provides value to the customer (customer will buy it)
  • Focus Preserving value with less work
  • Just in time thinking, managing resources
  • Improving process, eliminate waste (time, materials)
What Lean Ultimately Can Do For You:
  •     Eliminate Chaos
  •     Less stress
  •     More productivity
  •     More profitability
  •     Peace of mind in your process
How Lean Works:
While many people think of Lean as having application solely in the manufacturing sector where it had its genesis, Lean has become a fundamental approach for continuous improvement in both manufacturing and service industries worldwide.

A Lean organization understands customer value and focuses its key processes to continuously increase it. The goal of Lean is to identify and eliminate non-essential and non-value added steps in the business process in order to streamline production, improve quality and gain customer loyalty.

About Bob Barnes:
With over 35 years as a process improvement professional, Bob especially enjoys coaching on the application of Lean principles to make positive change. In addition to making significant contributions to organizations as an internal and external consultant, he has mentored over 100 project leads and helped train 500+ associates on Lean. Certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, he holds his B.S. and MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Seating is limited to 12. Please RSVP by TODAY 8/15/2016 to Sherry Iacobucci: [email protected] or call 508-347-9343.
