Freedom Week: Celebrating African American Emancipation

June 15 to 21

Old Sturbridge Village recognizes Juneteenth (a celebration dating back to 1865 thought to be the first known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States) by telling some of the most inspiring stories in African-American history. Visitors can learn about the movement leading up to the abolition of slavery that took place in the early 19th century and also enjoy activities and crafts with African-American themes.

Richard Andersen "A Home Run for Bunny"

June 18

6:00 pm - Reception with the Author     7:00 pm - Lecture Program

Richard Andersen, a professor of writing and literature at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, will be the first speaker in the 2015 Speaker Series at Old Sturbridge Village.

Andersen is the author of "A Home Run for Bunny," a book that tells the story of the 1934 American Legion All-Stars Baseball Team from Springfield, Massachusetts that faced racial prejudice in when they showed up in Gastonia, North Carolina for the Eastern Regionals.

The team included Ernest "Bunny" Taliaferro, an African-American player. Organizers in North Carolina gave the team an ultimatum: play without your black teammate, or go home. The team members unanimously refused to play without their black member, and returned to Springfield.

It is a story of enduring triumph in an age when racial prejudice was commonplace in the South, and continues to inspire people today when facing injustice.

Tony King, the 1934 Captain of the Springfield American Legion team and now aged 97, said "How different it is today when we have [had] a black governor in Massachusetts and a black president as the head of our country. Sports were meant to bring people together, not separate them because of their color."

Copies of Mr. Andersen's book will be for sale at the event, and he will sign copies after the program. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. Visit this link for more

Longest Day

The Longest Day Event for Alzheimer's Awareness

Sunday, June 21 at The Overlook

On Sunday, June 21, Overlook will be honoring the opening of the new Memory Care Assisted Living Unit, the Fieldstone at Overlook, by participating in the Longest Day event, which raises funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association while honoring caregivers and those living with this disease. Activities will be held throughout the day (see the link to the flyer below). All proceeds will go directly to the cause.

You can help in any or all of these three ways:

  1. Join us in the fight against Alzheimer's by joining Cathy's team, Fieldstone at Overlook. Come to the event, bring some friends and have some fun!
  2. Make a donation if you can't get here. Help us reach our goal by making a donation to Cathy's fundraising page. (Or just join us for lunch - the $5 fee goes directly to the cause!)
  3. Spend some time volunteering during the day.

We are in a competition to be one of the top fundraising teams for this event. Overlook has a chance to win a Nu-Step recumbent trainer for the fitness center to benefit our residents.

Everyone knows someone who has been affected by this disease, or has been personally impacted by it, as I have. (I lost my Mom to Alzheimer's). Help us celebrate the opening of the Fieldstone at Overlook, and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

For more information, call Cathy LaRocca at 508-434-2401.

For more details see the Overlook Longest Day Flier.pdf.

Gateway Players Auditions: Who Am I This Time?
July 12 and 14, Gateway Arts Barn 111 Main Street, Southbridge

Auditions for "Who Am I This Time"  (& Other Conundrums of Love), by Aaron Posner, adapted from stories by Kurt Vonnegut, will be held on Sunday, July 12th, at 6:30pm, and on Tuesday, July 14th at 6:30pm at the Gateway Arts Barn.  This comedy will be directed by David Corkum and produced by Bill Guy.  Four men and four women, of varying ages, as well as one Teenage Boy are needed.  Some of the parts are dual roles.  Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.  2-3 actors also need to be able to play the Guitar.

For questions, please call Gateway at 508-764-4531 and the director will return the call. Rehearsals will be held on Sunday and Wednesday nights, and Performance dates are October 2, 3, 9, 10, & 11. Presented by permission through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

THE STORY: The subject of this play-as we are told at the outset-is love, pure and complicated. Set on the stage of The North Crawford Mask & Wig Club ("the finest community theatre in central Connecticut!"), three early comic masterpieces by Kurt Vonnegut (Long Walk to Forever, Who am I This Time? and Go Back to Your Precious Wife and Son) are sewn together into a seamless evening of hilarity and humanity. With a single set, wonderful roles for nine versatile actors, and Vonnegut's singular wit and insight into human foibles, this is a smart, delightful comedy for the whole family.
